2017 marks a historic year for Doctor Who.
Not only will outgoing Time Lord Peter Capaldi bid farewell to the hit sci-fi show, but Jodie Whittaker has been selected as his replacement, which means series 11 of Doctor Who will herald the first female Doctor at long last. It’s an exciting time for the Who universe, then, but it’s about to get even better.
The upcoming Christmas special is going to be a big deal, and for more reasons than one. For starters, though, it’s stuffed like a yuletide turkey with tons of things of interest for fans. Capaldi is going to regenerate into Jodie Whittaker, as mentioned above, David Bradley’s First Doctor will be teaming up with the Twelfth, and former companions Pearl Mackie and Jenna Coleman are set to have cameos. Now, we can add one more thing to the list of reasons for why we’re excited about the special, and that’s that it’ll be screening in theatres.
Yes, the Doctor Who Christmas Special will be playing on the big screen this year for one night only, ensuring that Capaldi gets the sendoff he deserves. If you’re interested, you’ll be able to catch it on December 27th at 7pm local time, and should you choose this viewing option, you’ll also get “two exclusive bonus pieces which will take audiences behind the scenes of the holiday special and celebrate the tenures of Capaldi, who has led the series since 2013, and exiting showrunner Steven Moffat.”
“’Twice Upon a Time’ will mark the 16th cinema event we have presented in partnership with BBC Worldwide North America,” Fathom Events VP of Programming Kymberli Frueh said in a statement. “Our Doctor Who events are the perfect opportunities for Whovians to meet up, giving them a chance to enjoy their favorite content together in a big screen setting.”

Tickets for Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time will be available starting on October 20th and can be purchased at FathomEvents.com, or at participating theater box offices.
