Supergirl Casts Jesse Rath As Brainiac 5

Even though the Supergirl TV series has borrowed heavily from Kara Zor-El's cousin's rogues gallery, there's no denying how much it's embraced the source material. To date, we've seen the likes of Martian Manhunter, Livewire and the Parasite brought to life in ways that not even Smallville was able to accomplish.

So, naturally, one would expect season 3 to further utilize the vastness of the DC Universe, and devoted comic book readers who’ve thus far been paying attention have expected the Legion of Super-Heroes to show up before long. Not only has their signature ring been teased on this show in the past, but many of us suspected that the 31st century is where Mon-El’s ship ended up, something that actor Chris Wood has mildly hinted at.

In fact, Amy Jackson was cast as Saturn Girl not long ago, but that technically wasn’t a guarantee any of her buddies would be showing up. Now, though, the pieces are falling into place, with another core member of the Legion set to arrive in modern day National City.

As it turns out, Jesse Rath (Defiance) will play none other than Brainiac 5 on a recurring basis. And while we’ve yet to see him in full costume or makeup, the character description provided sounds quite close to his comic book counterpart:

Half computer, half organic life and boasting a 12-level intellect, Brainiac 5 is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes who travels to National City from the 31st Century to help Supergirl and the DEO battle Reign, the villain that L-Corp CEO Samantha Arias (played by Odette Annable) is on track to becoming.

In addition to that, it sounds like a possible love triangle involving him, Kara and Mon-El is in the cards, as executive producer Andrew Kreisberg previously teased, “Someone down the road will like Kara a lot, which will be a lot of fun.” Time will tell, but perhaps they’ll draw inspiration from the romance that fans of Justice League Unlimited may recall.

Supergirl airs on Monday nights on The CW.
