It’s going on five years since 343 Industries took to the stage at E3 and announced plans to bring Halo to cable TV and still, we’re no closer to seeing the end product.
Unveiled as a collaboration between 343, Microsoft and Steven Spielberg (!), there’s been nary a mention of the live-action project ever since, leading many to assume that a premium adaptation of Halo, one of the biggest video game IPs on the market, was little more than wishful thinking.
Turns out that’s not the case, though, as Showtime President and CEO David Nevins has insisted that the Halo TV series is “still in very active development.” Not only that, but he’s even laid eyes on the scripts, so perhaps it’s further along than initially thought?
Before we get our hopes up, though, here’s what Gary Levine, president of programming at Showtime, added in the same interview with TVGuide:
[It’s] absolutely still in development, still moving forward and I’m encouraged by what we’ve seen so far. It’s still live action, and it will definitely satisfy the fans of Halo and I think also satisfy the drama audiences of Showtime.
This is by no means the first time Halo has been repackaged for television; over the years, fans of Bungie’s legendary video game series have bore witness to Halo: Forward Unto Dawn, along with the Xbox Original web series, Halo: Nightfall, which starred Mike Colter of Luke Cage and The Defenders.
When it comes to this latest Halo adaptation, though, there are precious few details currently available. That being said, fans can take solace in the fact that, yes, Master Chief is still headed for the small-screen – even if he’s taking his sweet time to arrive at his destination.
