Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the stars of the beloved Cornetto trilogy, are set to bring their unique talents to a new TV show. Similar to the likes of the duo’s previous work on Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World‘s End, which mixed comedy with the zombie, cop and sci-fi genres, respectively, their new project will be a horror/comedy mash-up.
Variety revealed the news earlier today, announcing that the series will be called Truth Seekers and take the form of a half-hour sitcom that follows a three-person paranormal investigation team. Speaking about the new show, Pegg had this to say:
“Each episode is going to be an adventure, a potential haunting or something. It’ll start as a very parochial idea, a very small business venture for these people, but it will expand as the series goes on to be something far more global. It’s a language everyone understands, the mystery of the unknown. ‘Shaun of the Dead’ was a very parochial story set in North London and somehow it managed to get this global reach because everyone understands the language of zombie movies.”
Pegg and Frost will be producing the project though their Stolen Picture banner, which only launched last year and now has its first ever film in post-production. Funnily enough, it’s another horror/comedy titled Slaughterhouse Rulez, about a boarding school attacked by something evil hidden in the local woods. It’ll star Pegg and Frost as well as Asa Butterfield and Michael Sheen and is expected to land in cinemas on September 7th.
Truth Seekers, meanwhile, will be the pair’s first TV show together since Spaced, the cult favourite British sitcom that ran from 1999 to 2001, directed by their longtime collaborator Edgar Wright. Whether this new effort can live up to their previous work remains to be seen, but Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are two tremendously talented individuals, so we’re certainly hopeful.
