For fans of Conan the Barbarian, we’ve got an exciting update tonight.
After the planned film sequel starring Arnie seemingly fell through last year, we’re now learning that the property is headed to television instead, with a new show currently in development at Amazon. Coming to us from Colony co-creator Ryan Condal, Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik and Fargo exec producer Warren Littlefield, it’ll be titled Conan and will aim to “retell the classic character’s story via a return to his literary origins.”
Deadline’s report describes the show as follows:
Driven out of his tribal homelands, Conan wanders the mysterious and treacherous world of civilization where he searches for purpose in a place that rejects him as a mindless savage.
That’s not much to go on, of course, but it’s still early, early days for this one and just knowing that the property is being resurrected is enough to have us excited. After all, the two ’80s films starring Schwarzenegger were great fun, not to mention they helped catapult him to superstardom. And while the reboot in 2011 that had Jason Momoa in the title role fell a bit flat, there’s still a good amount of interest out there in seeing the character return once more.
As we mentioned above, Arnie was actually supposed to play the hero again in a film called The Legend of Conan, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about that and it’s widely assumed to be dead at this point. So, it’s with great excitement that we bring you this news about Amazon’s planned TV show and as more updates on Conan are made available, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
