Iris West has developed a catchphrase she often says to her husband: “We are the Flash.” In an upcoming episode of the hit CW show, that’s going to become more true than usual, as Barry Allen’s other half will temporarily acquire his speedster powers, meaning that it’s finally her turn to save Central City from supervillains.
Someone who’s very excited by this development is Kevin Smith, the cult director who’s worked on several outings across the Arrowverse. In fact, he was filming episode 17 of The Flash season 4 when he spotted actress Candice Patton in her superhero costume (which has just been unveiled). From what he saw, he promised that she “crushed it” in stepping up to become a speedster, Tweeting the following:
When we were in pre-pro on the episode of @CW_TheFlash that I directed, I saw footage of Speedster Iris! @candicekp crushed it! She’s always been the heart of the show but now she gets to wear a mask too!
Smith’s episode is titled “Null and Annoyed” and will follow directly on from “Run, Iris, Run” which, you guessed it, is the installment where Iris gets her powers. But how does this event occur? Well, the previously released synopsis for the episode gives us a pretty good idea of how it will go down. Hint: it’s all to do with the metahuman-of-the-week.
“Team Flash confronts a new bus meta, Matthew AKA Melting Pot (guest star Leonardo Nam), with the ability to swap people’s DNA. During a battle with Team Flash, Matthew transfers Barry’s (Grant Gustin) super speed to Iris (Candice Patton). Now, with a new threat unleashed on Central City, Barry must act as the team leader while Iris takes on the mantle of superhero speedster in order to defeat their new foe.”
Iris’ turn as a speedster might have a wider importance in the grand scheme of things, too. We previously discussed how her purple and white superhero suit might just be foreshadowing the real identity of Jessica Parker Kennedy’s mystery character who keeps turning up from time to time.
We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes from that, but be sure to catch The Flash when it returns from a short break this Tuesday, February 27th on The CW.
