Natalia Alianovna “Natasha” Romanoff – better known to you, I and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the deadly Black Widow – is poised for a huge arc spread out across Avengers: Infinity War and its 2019 sequel.
After all, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent has finally been given the green light for her own standalone movie (and not a moment too soon, we might add), while Scarlett Johansson’s Phase One Avenger will also feature quite prominently when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes begin to wage war against Thanos and his nefarious Black Order late next month.
How do we know? Because the incredible first teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War placed the blonde Black Widow in Wakanda, where she can be seen charging into battle alongside T’Challa, Okoye, the rehabilitated Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers, with whom she shares a long-standing, platonic relationship. But when it comes to Miss. Romanoff, in particular, ScarJo recently spoke to EW about the changes coming to her character.
I think it’s been a dark time. I wouldn’t say that my character has been particularly hopeful, but I think she’s hardened even more than she probably was before.
Elsewhere, ScarJo’s agent also came up during Entertainment Weekly’s conversation with Chris Evans (Captain America/Nomad), who noted that the superpowered duo has been through thick and thin and a full-blown Civil War.
It’s always felt like Natasha uses her cynicism as a defense mechanism. She weaponizes it for survival. I think Steve is a little newly calloused in the ways of the world. But Natasha is always going to be a couple steps ahead of him in terms of experience and knowledge. They’ve leaned on each other for different reasons. It’s reinforced the friendship.
And it’s that friendship, among many others, that will be put to the sword when Avengers: Infinity War lights up theaters on April 27th – or April 26th, if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom.
