Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Doesn’t Know Anything About Doctor Strange 2

Chatting with Entertainment Weekly recently to promote Avengers: Infinity War, Benedict Cumberbatch said he knows nothing of Doctor Strange 2.

One of the heroes we can’t wait to check in on in Avengers: Infinity War is Doctor Stephen Strange. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Master of the Mystic Arts will mostly team up with Iron Man and Spider-Man in the movie and, going by what we’ve seen so far, they’re going to be a terrific trio. In particular, fans are keen to see the “Awesome Facial Hair Bros” come together for the first time on screen.

In fact, while talking with Entertainment Weekly recently, Cumberbatch spoke about his admiration for his co-star, Robert Downey Jr., while also mentioning that he’s still in the dark about Doctor Strange 2. First up, though, the actor had nothing but good things to say about the daddy of the MCU, praising how RDJ leads a set.

“I got on very well with Robert Downey Jr. He’s the most inclusive leading man, and generous to a fault, and just a pleasure to be around. It’s a very happy set when RDJ’s on it, and that goes for everyone, not just the actors. He’s funny, he’s quick, he’s so light on his feet, such a smart-thinking actor.

It’s quite something to watch people like RDJ, who have been doing it so brilliantly for so long, in their prime. It’s a really really nice thing to be on the set, like I said, but it’s a really really lovely thing to watch him work and be part of that work as well.”

The British star first joined the Marvel universe back in 2016’s Doctor Strange, and after Infinity War and the as yet untitled Avengers 4, it’s got to be a cert that Doctor Strange 2 will follow soon after that. At the moment, though, Cumberbatch admitted that he doesn’t know anything about what plans the studio might have for his solo franchise.

“Not at the moment, no. The masterplan is continually in flux, so it would be out of order for me to speculate.”

While he probably does know a bit more than he’s letting on, it’s definitely still early days for the upcoming sequel. Director Scott Derrickson is likely to return and going by the end of the first film, we imagine it’ll see Chiwetel Ejiofor reprise his role as Baron Mordo, this time as a villain. Aside from that though, there’s not much else to report on.

As for Infinity War, the second trailer told us that Strange will be one of the most significant heroes in the ensemble as he possesses one of the Infinity Stones, specifically the Time Stone. As such, we imagine Cumberbatch will have quite a bit of screen time and can’t wait to see his Sorcerer Supreme back in action when Avengers: Infinity War hits cinemas on April 27th.
