10 Things We Learned From The New Avengers: Infinity War Trailer

After months of waiting, the second full-length trailer for Avengers: Infinity War is finally here. Since our first look at the movie arrived back in November, fans have been clamouring for more and - not forgetting that Super Bowl teaser that featured a lot of fresh footage - the wait is now over. In many ways, this second trailer continues on in much the same way as the first, highlighting pretty much all of the heroes (still not Hawkeye, though!) who will be involved in the battle to end all battles as Thanos comes a-knocking for the Infinity Stones. However, there's much more of the Guardians of the Galaxy this time around and the Mad Titan himself also gets a good chunk of screentime - which is understandable, given how important he is to the plot. So, what juicy hints and teases can we pick out about the cinematic event of the year from this exhilarating new trailer? Well, there's quite a lot to unpack, but here are the 10 most important things we learned from the latest Avengers: Infinity War promo. As always, if we've missed something, make sure to remind us in the comments section down below. "With A Snap Of His Fingers..." In contrast to the first trailer, this second look at Infinity War opens with the Guardians instead of closing with them. Specifically, Zoe Saldana's Gamora gets to kick things off with an ominous speech that handily lays out Thanos' (Josh Brolin) goal in the film. "The entire time I knew him," says the Mad Titan's adoptive daughter, "he only ever had one goal... To wipe out half the universe. If he gets all the Infinity Stones, he can do it with a snap of his fingers." This will be very familiar to any fans of the comics. In The Infinity Gauntlet arc, Thanos does just that. When he gets his hands on all the Stones, or Gems as they're called on the page, the villain snaps his fingers and halves the population of the universe - meaning that half of the human beings on Earth disappear in an instant. What's different here, though, is that this was not Thanos' ultimate goal in the source material, it was more like an opening gambit to display his immense power. The Russo brothers have previously opened up about how they've taken some liberties with the character in order to make sure he's as compelling an antagonist as possible, and it looks like they've achieved that. Tony Has A Plan It's then revealed that Gamora is talking to none other than Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, who's clearly learning about Thanos for the first time, as he asks the former assassin turned galactic hero to clarify her ol' pops' name. Going by his doom-laden look, Gamora's warning severely shakes Tony - and why wouldn't it? Thanos represents the apocalyptic threat he had been trying to prepare the Earth for since Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, the invincible Iron Man isn't going to wallow in despair. The trailer quickly moves to a voiceover from Tony in which he outlines a rough plan that might give the Avengers a chance against the Mad Titan. "We got one advantage," Stark explains." He's coming to us. We have what Thanos wants, so that's what we use." To illustrate his point, we get some clips of the two Infinity Stones located on Earth in action. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is seen in his Sanctum Sanctorum activating the Eye of Agamotto - or Time Stone - which he wears around his neck, while Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch and Vision (Paul Bettany) look very worried over in Wakanda. It seems they're well aware of the danger Vision's in thanks to the Mind Stone lodged in his forehead. Star-Lord And Iron Man! If any Marvel fan out there says they didn't beam like an idiot when they first watched this part of the trailer, they're lying. On top of showing us Tony with Gamora, the promo also treats us to a bit of banter between Iron Man and Star-Lord, a team-up we've been dreaming about since 2014. On what looks like Thanos' homeworld of Titan, which has been rendered a lifeless husk due to a past planet-wide tragedy, the pair are joined by Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and they seem to be preparing for a face-off with Thanos. The only problem is, Peter Quill isn't too hyped for Tony's plan. "Let's talk about this plan of yours," says Peter, attempting to be diplomatic before just coming out with the truth. "I think it's good except it sucks. So let me do the plan and that way it might be really good." Tony's gobsmacked by Peter's arrogance and can only say "wow." It's hilarious but also says something about Tony's character development over the past ten years. He probably would have had a similar attitude to Peter back in Phase One, but now he's matured enough to be the sensible one of the group. Thor's New Weapon While Iron Man, Star-Lord and friends are on Titan, Thor, Rocket and Groot are on their own cosmic side mission. As glimpsed in previous teasers, the unlikely trio will head off into space to get the God of Thunder a powerful new weapon, after his trusty hammer Mjolnir was destroyed by Hela back in Thor: Ragnarok. The trailer reveals the moment that Chris Hemsworth's Asgardian gets his hands on his new accessory, testing it out by channeling his lightning powers through it which crackle throughout the forge. With his billowing red cape (which he also seems to have got back somehow) and his mighty powers, Thor really looks like a god in this moment. It clearly affects Rocket and Groot, too, who look up at him in awe. It's unusual to see the cynical Rocket so sincerely impressed. The framing of the shot deliberately keeps the appearance of the new weapon a secret, in an effort to preserve the surprise for the full movie, but upcoming action figures of the character have already revealed what Stormbreaker looks like. Thanos Flashbacks Following on from Gamora's speech, the trailer then gives us a monologue from Thanos himself as he explains what he's up to. "When I'm done, half of humanity will still exist," the Mad Titan explains. Later on, he adds: "Perfectly balanced, as all things should be." The wording is interesting as it isn't villainous, per se, as Thanos emphasizes the fact that half of Earth's population will still live on after the aforementioned snap of his fingers. It's clear that the Mad Titan isn't simply power-crazed but truly believes he's doing a good thing - or at least something necessary - for the universe. To illustrate the shades of grey the character will have in Infinity War, one clip appears to be a flashback to Gamora's youth. Thanos approaches her with what looks to be a bunch of alien flowers. The little green girl's hand clutches his massive purple finger and the adoptive father and daughter walk off together. Thanos called Gamora the favourite of his children in Guardians of the Galaxy and it looks like we might get to explore a bit of tenderness in their relationship. Loki And The Black Order Gamora isn't the only one of Thanos' kids, though. He's lost the loyalty of both Gamora and Nebula, but he has plenty more where they came from. Namely, Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian. Together, they make up Thanos' elite squad of mercenaries called the Black Order. Our first look at the group gathered together comes in this trailer. Intriguingly, they're seen surrounding Tom Hiddleston's Loki on what looks to be the ruined Asgardian refugee ship. It's clear by now that Thanos attacks the vessel in order to get the Tesseract from Loki early on in the film. What isn't clear is whether Loki will willingly hand it over to his former boss or if he's really turned over a new leaf, as depicted in Thor: Ragnarok, and will stand up to the villain. The framing of this shot doesn't help clarify the mystery, either. Is Loki standing with the Black Order as their ally or is he being threatened by them? All we know is that Thanos gets his hands on the Tesseract one way or the other. We see him crush it in his fist to reveal the Space Stone, which he adds to his gauntlet. Battles Of Wakanda And Titan Much of the second half of the trailer is taken up with clips from the grand battles that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will lead against Thanos and his forces. Not including Thor, Rocket and Groot's excursion, it looks like the war will be fought on two fronts. A small team will head out to Titan, while the majority of the heroes will hold the fort in Wakanda. It's difficult to work out the time frame of these events as the trailer suggests that both battles happen simultaneously. As Iron Man and Star-Lord's team faces Thanos himself, Wakanda is attacked by the Outriders. This could be how it goes down in the movie, but comments from the crew have suggested that the third act of the film will take place exclusively in Wakanda, with all of the heroes eventually convening in the formally secret African nation. The Russos have confirmed that the battle takes place there because Wakanda was chosen as the best place to keep Vision safe from Thanos, as it has an arsenal of high-tech weaponry and even space-age jets. However, despite all the gadgets, evidence suggests the fight will still be tough for our heroes. Avengers In Trouble As the trailer builds to a crescendo, many shots showcase various Avengers caught in a spot of bother (to put it lightly). Firstly, Thanos lets loose his awesome strength on Thor as he appears to be crushing his skull in one hand. Not many people can make mincemeat of the Asgardian king like that but it looks like the Mad Titan can, perhaps because of the handy Power Stone slotted in his Infinity Gauntlet. Next, Doctor Strange is the victim of a bizarre bit of torture from Ebony Maw. He seems to have glass stalactites pricking him all over his body, like some kind of evil acupuncture. Poor Stephen sounds like he's in excruciating pain, too, which only seems to make Ebony Maw enjoy it all the more, going by the sadistic grin on his face. Finally, even the Hulk is having trouble handling himself. Though we don't see the Green Goliath in the flesh in the trailer, merchandise has revealed that Banner's alter ego is inside the Hulkbuster Iron Man armour seen tussling with Outriders in the promo. Unfortunately, they appear to be too much for the big guy as they swarm over him and pin him down. Can't anyone stand up to Thanos? Well, funny you should ask... Steve Rogers Holds His Own Where the rest of his friends fail, Steve Rogers miraculously manages to hold his own against the Mad Titan. In the climactic clip of the trailer, we see Thanos attempt to crush the hero formally known as Captain America with his gauntleted fist. However, Steve somehow manages to hold him off. It clearly takes an incredible amount of effort, but it works. Thanos is definitely not used to this as he's very surprised by Steve's strength and force of will. So. what's going on here? How can Rogers resist Thanos when even Thor couldn't? Cap is super-strong, of course, but surely he's not at Asgardian levels. It's just a theory on our part, but could he possibly have a sneaky Infinity Stone on his person which he's using to give him the boost he needs to go toe-to-toe with Thanos? We can see here that the villain still only has the Space and Power Stones on him at this point. With the Mind Stone with Vision, that leaves Cap with three Stones potentially in his possession. Or, maybe his new beard has imbued him with even more strength? What? Stranger things have happened in this franchise. "Oh, We're Using Our Made-Up Names?" Finally, as with the previous trailer ending on a lighter note when Thor encountered the Guardians, this second promo for Infinity War gives us a hilarious exchange between some more characters meeting for the first time. Namely, Spidey and Strange. The ever-perky Peter Parker introduces himself to the Master of the Mystic Arts, who shakes his hand and calls himself "Doctor Strange." Peter mistakenly believes this is his "made-up" superhero codename and switches back to calling himself Spider-Man. Stephen Strange looks exasperated. He's probably bored of people mocking his name, after Kaecilius did something similar in his 2016 solo movie. Of course, this is just a taste of the Spider-Man/Doctor Strange dynamic that will be explored in the film. We've been promised that Holland and Cumberbatch have "great chemistry," so expect lots more fun to come from these two in Avengers: Infinity War.
