Westworld Season 2’s Official Title Provides Some Story Clues

The first season of HBO’s sci-fi series Westworld was one hell of an enigma. Viewers hypothesized in every sandy corner of that maze, only to wind up back at square one as Ramin Djawadi’s main title theme began to roll on the next episode. Simply put, it was hard enough to decipher Westworld when the execs weren’t keeping helpful hints to themselves, which is precisely what’s been happening behind the scenes.

In a recent sit-down with creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy about the show’s looming sophomore outing, EW’s learned that each season of Westworld is privately christened by the writers and producers.

“We think of our seasons as discrete components in the series, to the point where we’ve named our seasons. The first season was called ‘The Maze.’ The second season is called ‘The Door.’” Nolan said.

Although season 1’s alternative label, “The Maze,” isn’t exactly a perspective-shattering revelation, season 2’s title, “The Door,” indeed provides ample room for feverish speculation, especially when contemplated alongside further analyzation from Nolan regarding the upcoming run.

“If the first season was a journey inward, this is a journey outward, this a search for what else is beyond the park, and what else is in the park. Are there more parks? How big is the park? What’s beyond the park?” Nolan said.

Premiering April 22nd, the best we honorary residents of Sweetwater can do is speculate about Westworld’s second season. Given what’s been said by Nolan, Joy, and several of the show’s cast members in the past, the show’s undoubtedly received an upgrade in scope and viewers can’t do much else to prepare for what’s sure to be another mind-boggling experience.
