Discussing whether a TV show may get cancelled is one thing, but it does nothing to lessen the shock the day the ax actually does come down. Granted, this is a situation we’ve kept our eye on for a bit now, but the moment you’ve dreaded has finally arrived: Starz has pulled the plug on Ash vs. Evil Dead.
Now, this is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, as a three season run is quite respectable – especially when you consider that the story started by Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy hadn’t been continued in what felt like an eternity. That said, we imagine this this show was a dream come true for many of you.
But, like we said earlier, the cancellation shouldn’t come as much of a surprise because ratings were sharply declining this season. In fact, one week even saw a drop-off of 60,000 viewers, so you’d better believe the network wasn’t going to let that go unnoticed. If you look at it from their point of view, they probably felt they had no choice in making the decision.
Still, series lead Bruce Campbell can’t help but reflect on the positive experiences that the past three years have brought him, saying:
āAsh vs Evil DeadĀ has been the ride of a lifetime. Ash Williams was the role of a lifetime. It was an honor to reunite withĀ Evil DeadĀ partners Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi to give our tireless fans another taste of the outrageous horror/comedy they demanded. I will always be grateful to Starz for the opportunity to revisit the franchise that launched our careers.ā
Of course, a tiny sliver of Ash vs. Evil Dead remains, as the season 3 finale – now the series finale – is set to air on April 29. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.
