Avengers: Infinity War Screenwriters Debunk Major Soul Stone Theory

Of the six Infinity Stones that underpin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve only been introduced to five: the Space Stone (blue), the Reality Stone (red), the Power Stone (purple), the Mind Stone (yellow) and the Time Stone (green), which is currently residing in Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto.

That leaves only one – the Soul Stone, an elusive gem that is currently one of the most hotly-debated plot points of Avengers: Infinity War. Indeed, the secrecy surrounding that long-lost ingot has spawned all manner of fan theories, including one particularly wild assertion that Iron Man and the Soul Stone are, in fact, one and the same.

Another online theory has named Heimdall as the possible owner of the Soul Stone purely because the name ‘Thanos’ can be traced back to each ingot – so the Tesseract is the Space Stone while the Reality Stone can be found in the Aether. Elsewhere, Doctor Strange’s necklace plays host to the Time Stone; the Power Stone is in the Orb, and the Mind Stone is in Loki’s scepter. The only letter missing from the pattern is ‘H’, leaving many to wonder if Heimdall is the final piece of the puzzle.

Well, not so fast. While promoting Avengers: Infinity War during a recent interview with The Huffington Post, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely debunked that popular fan theory concerning the Soul Stone and its whereabouts.

McFeely: “That seems fairly random”

Markus: “I don’t think that’s how you go about writing a good script.”

McFeely: “It really isn’t. ‘You know, it’d be great to put the soul stone here but it’s not an O,’ or whatever the hell it is.”

Markus: “We need an O planet.”

Whatever the case, it’s supposedly the “most dangerous” gem of them all, or so says Avengers: Infinity War‘s official prelude comic. That tells us Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are up against it, and that’s before we even factor in the conclusive Avengers 4. Look for that one to arrive in May of 2019.
