Though it may err on the side of hyperbole, there’s never been a movie quite like Avengers: Infinity War.
Frankly, after 10 years and 18 films worth of groundwork, Marvel’s box office juggernaut is more akin to a cinematic event, one that really ought to be seen on the biggest screen possible. It’s by no means perfect, of course, but as a pseudo-finale to this current installment of the MCU, directors Joe and Anthony Russo delivered the goods, and Marvel Studios is now in the process of reaping the rewards.
Infinity War‘s box office numbers continue to climb by the hour, and we brought you the news earlier this morning that the biggest MCU movie thus far is expected to add an additional $100M-$130M to its domestic tally over the next few days. Such a strong second weekend haul would catapult Avengers: Infinity War up toward the tip-top of the box office charts, though Forbes has gone one step further to claim that the Marvel threequel has what it takes to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time.
That title currently belongs to Joss Whedon’s first Avengers movie ($1.5 billion), followed by Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion), Iron Man 3 ($1.2 billion) and Captain America: Civil War at $1.15 billion. Infinity War, on the other hand, currently stands at $857M, meaning it’ll likely reach $1.2 billion by Sunday evening.
And that’s before we even factor China into the equation. The Russos’ crossover isn’t expected to open in the Middle Kingdom until May 11th, where analysts predict a solid $100M+ opening. Couple this with the imminent boost from Russia and it looks certain that Avengers: Infinity War will overtake Joss Whedon’s original movie when all is said and done.
Perhaps the most telling stat of all is that the threequel is said to be pacing 74 percent above Civil War, and a full 66 percent when compared to Age Of Ultron, which, if nothing else, reminds us just how far Avengers: Infinity War has come in only seven days. Next up? The $2 billion milestone.
