Summer is upon us, ladies and gentlemen, which can only mean one thing: an onslaught of big-name Hollywood blockbusters.
Avengers: Infinity War kicked things off with a cosmic bang late last month, and it’s fair to say that moviegoers are still reeling from the Marvel epic – not to mention that gut-wrenching finale. On the other end of the Disney lot is Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Lucasfilm-backed space western that’s about to break new ground for the titular character. And it looks like we haven’t seen the last of Alden Ehrenreich’s space pirate, either.
Both titles are expected to do gangbusters over the coming weeks, but they’ll soon face stiff competition from Deadpool 2, the anti-hero sequel that’s all set to flip the bird at movie clichés and rival comic book films – regardless of whether they hail from Marvel or DC.
And so, following up on a bizarre football-themed promo and a cheeky clip that’ll no doubt make Batman V Superman blush, 20th Century Fox (via Empire) has today rolled out a series of high-res action shots featuring Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) and Blind Al (Leslie Uggams).
There’s also a pic of Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) surrounded by rubble, and it doesn’t take a soothsayer to realize that Russell (Julian Dennison) is responsible for the fiery destruction. He’s the Deadpool 2 equivalent of a MacGuffin – a living, breathing plot device who sparks a full-blown battle between Cable and the Merc With a Mouth.
The former will be played by Josh Brolin in what will be his second major comic book role of the summer – after Infinity War, of course – and it’ll be interesting to see his portrayal of Nathan Summers projected onto the big screen.
Deadpool 2 opens big on May 18th.
