As it stands, the film is still slated for a North American release on December 21st, but that day may not be set in stone, especially given the recent change in UK release date from the 21st to the 14th. Should Aquaman hit theaters on the former, it’ll have to compete in its opening weekend with Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, as well as the Robert Rodriguez actioner Alita: Battle Angel. As such, Warner may not be willing to put its first DC film since the commercially disappointing Justice League in direct competition with a franchise that’s previously dominated the box office in the hands of Michael Bay. Then again, early buzz has been mostly positive for the Atlantis-based blockbuster, so perhaps it’s a chance worth taking.

As the first pic of what could almost be considered DC’s post-Snyder era (Zack’s executive producer credit aside), Aquaman has quite a lot to prove, but it could be the win that the franchise so desperately needs. After all, Jason Momoa’s turn in Justice League hinted that he may well have the charisma to carry his own film.

Moreover, while James Wan’s experience is mostly in horror, the Insidious and Conjuring director has had nothing but commercial hits this decade, the biggest of all being his action blockbuster Furious 7, which is still the highest grossing film of the Fast & Furious franchise. The point is that things could all turn out quite well for DC’s next feature.

In addition to Momoa, Aquaman also stars Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Patrick Wilson and Nicole Kidman. Expect to see it in cinemas from December 21st stateside, unless we hear otherwise.
