Star Trek 4 To Feature A Female Villain And New Female Hero

Star Trek 4, the next installment in the Kelvin timeline movie franchise - not to be confused with Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek - is making history for the fact that it has the series' first female director. That's right, S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, Orange is the New Black) is taking over from J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin and is set to get stuck into production in early 2019.

Star Trek 4, the next installment in the Kelvin timeline movie franchise – not to be confused with Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek – is making history for the fact that it has the series’ first female director. That’s right, S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, Orange is the New Black) is taking over from J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin and is set to get stuck into production in early 2019.

With that in mind, casting is now underway for the film and That Hashtag Show has details on two new additions to the Star Trek universe. According to the outlet, Clarkson’s working on finding “2 actresses, both 45-60, for the film’s main antagonist and an additional female hero.” Apparently, she’s thinking of a Tilda Swinton-type talent to play the villain. However, the site maintains that Swinton will NOT appear in the film.

Someone who could, though, is Danai Gurira, who’s in “early negotiations for an undisclosed role” in Star Trek 4. Going by her most well known parts in the past, we’d say she’d be a better fit for the hero, but regardless, THS says that Clarkson’s looking for “A-listers” to play these characters. The Walking Dead star definitely fits that bill nowadays, thanks to her roles in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.

As we’ve known for a long while, Star Trek 4 will also see the return of Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk, the late father of James T. Kirk last seen in 2009’s reboot. According to the short synopsis for the movie, “Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never got to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.”

We’ll keep you posted as more concrete details on Star Trek 4 come through, but in the meantime, tell us, do you think Gurira would make a good ally – or enemy – of the Enterprise crew? Have your say in the comments section down below.
