The Devil Doll is coming out to play… again.
As you’ve no doubt heard by now, MGM has tapped Norwegian filmmaker Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) to spearhead a remake of the original Child’s Play movie from 1988.
David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, the producers behind New Line’s incredibly successful It, are both on board, and it’s been explained that this project is totally unrelated to the recently-announced TV series, which is in development from Don Mancini and fellow Chucky architect, David Kirschner.
MGM’s plan is to fast-track its “contemporary reboot,” which has a script from Tyler Burton Smith, whose credits include Kung Fury and Remedy’s deeply cinematic video game, Quantum Break. And that’s apparently still the case, as casting has already begun, with That Hashtag Show alleging that The Incredible Hulk actress Liv Tyler has been offered the role of Andy’s mom, Karen.
From what we understand, the actress hasn’t signed on just yet, and there’s still nothing from the studio on this, but we know that Tyler Burton Smith has been tasked with putting together a “contemporary reboot” of the Chucky canon. That means the modern day Child’s Play will reportedly involve a “group of kids and a technologically-advanced doll that enters their world.”
So, a bit like Stranger Things then, only with a wicked Devil Doll instead of the Shadow Monster? Whatever the case, production is due to begin in Vancouver this September. Just don’t expect Don Mancini or David Kirschner to give their blessing anytime soon…
