While we’ve now got a pretty good look at the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope in the form of Solo and Rogue One and on TV in Star Wars Rebels, the time period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens remains considerably murkier (although, we’ve seen a bit in the novel Bloodline and the single player campaign in Star Wars Battlefront II).
That’s all set to change when Star Wars Resistance airs this fall, though, which sounds as if it’s going to flesh out this very interesting interim time in the universe as well as some of the Sequel Trilogy’s major characters. From what we understand, the series will run for 22 episodes and follows a young pilot named Kazuda (Kaz) Xiono.
He’ll be joined by familiar faces like Poe Dameron, Captain Phasma and BB-8, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see other mainstays like General Leia, Kylo Ren, General Hux and Supreme Leader Snoke making some kind of appearance during the show, too.
Now, giving us a better idea of what we’ll be seeing is this new synopsis for the first episode – titled The Recruit – which you can check out below:
“Resistance fighter Poe Dameron tasks young pilot Kazuda (Kaz) Xiono with spying on the First Order. At the time, little was known about the secretive organization and its strength. In order to fulfill his mission, Kaz travels to the space station Colossus, which is being used by many ships as a port to refuel and do repairs. However, there are also dangerous races taking place there. After Kaz bragged with his piloting skills at his arrival there, he is soon drawn into one of the races…”
One of the major criticisms of the Sequel Trilogy is that the First Order appears to have sprung from nowhere overnight, so hopefully, a character having to infiltrate their ranks in order to find out what they’re up to will give the writers a lot of scope to spell out the organization’s history and motivations.
Either way, this is shaping up to be a worthy addition to the animated Star Wars canon. The big screen cast, including Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, have been confirmed as doing voice work for the show and it seems that Disney’s going to throw some real welly into promoting it as a crucial chapter in the franchise.
Given how much of a high Rebels went out on (and the fact that Solo used a major plot element from it), I simply can’t wait to see what they do with Star Wars Resistance.
