As the trailer makes clear from the off with a nostalgic use of a Blockbuster video store, Captain Marvel is set back in the 1990s and will be influenced, according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, by 90s action flicks like Top Gun. We get a pretty good feel for that in the preview, too, which teases some great action sequences. As Nick Fury puts it, we have a “space invasion, big car chase” and more to look forward to.

Speaking of which, Samuel L. Jackson has been de-aged via the wonders of CGI for his appearance as Fury here. Captain Marvel will see the MCU stalwart in a very different place – not yet the S.H.I.E.L.D. director, Fury has both eyes in tact and, according to his voiceover in the teaser, he was thinking of quitting the service before he encounters Carol Danvers and she opens his eyes to the world of superheroes and aliens.

The trailer – and these stills – also give us a glimpse of the rest of the movie’s cast, including Jude Law’s Kree soldier (who has to be Mar-Vell but Marvel are flatly refusing to tell us this right now), Ben Mendelsohn as the leader of the shapeshifting Skrulls and, last but not least, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson in his first movie appearance since 2012’s The Avengers. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star has also been spruced up with a little computer trickery to play his younger self.

Captain Marvel soars into cinemas on March 8th and after seeing the first trailer, we can hardly wait.
