Supergirl Season 4 Poster

Supergirl Season 4 Premiere Synopsis Teases Much Change In National City

If assuring that viewers will accept another night of The CW's primetime lineup into their lives by moving Supergirl to Sundays was the network's intention, then I'm guessing they'll succeed in that regard. After already captivating audiences for its three previous seasons, the series showcasing the adventures of Kara Zor-El should help launch this new initiative - and give the upcoming Charmed reboot, which'll follow in the 9 pm slot, a boost in the process.

Though it took its sweet time getting here, we finally have a synopsis for season 4’s premiere. Granted, a new trailer and a fair amount of photos hit the web earlier this month, but descriptions are usually released three weeks ahead of time.

Impatience notwithstanding, here’s what to expect from “American Alien,” which has been named for one of the better Superman comics to have graced this decade:

HOPE VS. FEAR — Diving back into reporting, Kara (Melissa Benoist) welcomes a new cub reporter to CatCo. Meanwhile, James (Mehcad Brooks) and Lena (Katie McGrath) argue about James’ impending indictment for acting as the vigilante Guardian, while Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Brainy (Jesse Rath) struggle to get in sync at the DEO. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) is called into action when remnants of the anti-alien terrorist organization Cadmus try to assassinate pro-alien leaders, but their endgame turns out to be much more sinister than she expected. J’onn (David Harewood) relishes his peaceful new life, but an outing with an old friend causes him concern. Jesse Warn directed the episode with story by Robert Rovner & Jessica Queller and teleplay by Gabriel Llanas & Aadrita Mukerji (#401). Original airdate 10/14/2018

As you can see, there’s a heck of a lot going on in National City this fall. Supergirl may not prove to be as drastically different of a series upon its return as, say, Arrow, but it’s quite apparent the producers won’t be playing the same old song when the saga resume in just over two weeks from now.

Conspicuous by its absence is any mention of new big bad Agent Liberty (Smallville alum Sam Witwer), yet it does look like his entrance is being set up by the increasing anti-alien sentiment. Hey, it took Reign a while to arrive last year and she turned out to be more than formidable, so we see no reason to rush along the new guy.

Supergirl returns for its fourth season on Sunday, October 14 on The CW.
