Star Trek Producers Confirm The Picard Series Will Have Multiple Seasons

The New York Comic Con has been pretty damn good for Trekkies. We've gotten an awesome looking new trailer for season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery (including a bearded Spock appearing weirdly similar to Paul McCartney), an exact premiere date for the show and now some details on the hugely anticipated Picard series.

The New York Comic Con has been pretty damn good for Trekkies. We’ve gotten an awesome looking new trailer for season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery (including a bearded Spock appearing weirdly similar to Paul McCartney), an exact premiere date for the show and now some details on the hugely anticipated Picard series.

This latest update comes to us via TrekMovie, who spoke to Star Trek executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin and managed to get a few juicy details about what’s coming. Perhaps the best news is that this show won’t be a limited series. If it’s a success (and it’s obviously going to be), they’re already planning for multiple seasons to come. Knowing Picard is back for the foreseeable future means that they can really get their teeth into his ongoing story, too, not to mention it’ll give them the opportunity to explore the fates of the rest of The Next Generation crew.

Aside from that, we also know when it may arrive. We recently got a photo of Stewart and the team having their first production meeting, which clued us in that we might not have to wait too long to see it. Now, that’s been confirmed, with shooting scheduled to begin in April 2019 targeting an early 2020 release.

This is almost the exact same shooting schedule that season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery has used, perhaps allowing the two shows to share production staff. We also found out that they’re hoping multiple Trek shows aren’t airing at the same time, explaining that they want to build fan anticipation.

Last but not least, it’s been revealed that the Picard series isn’t going to tie into Discovery at all. This isn’t a huge surprise given that Stewart’s fan favorite captain was born in 2305 and Discovery takes place around the year 2260. And while we still don’t know what Picard will be doing – if he’ll be in command of a ship or who his enemy will be – I’m just happy that this dream Star Trek project is starting to look a bit more fleshed out.
