If you’re familiar with comic books, then you know whenever you see that “Elseworlds” stamp on the front of a DC title, anything is possible. I mean, the name alone tells you established continuity has been thrown out the window and, say, baby Kal-El’s rocket from Krypton may have landed somewhere in Russia rather than Kansas.
Similarly, The CW will soon play in a comparable sandbox when it launches the next Arrowverse crossover, also titled “Elseworlds,” later this fall. Aside from introducing Ruby Rose as Batwoman, it has fans and journalists alike speculating on the world of possibilities that’ve been opened up.
As usual, the Green Arrow himself, Stephen Amell, has managed to get people talking by dropping the following cryptic Tweet:
“Today on the crossover the director asked me if I could laugh less hysterically.”
Now, this could mean anything, but Laura Hurley over at Cinema Blend wonders if this will yield the Arrowverse’s version of the Joker – and if it could possibly be Oliver Queen from an alternate universe. After all, if he became a Nazi leader on Earth-X, then who’s to say he can’t go mad enough to become the Clown Prince of Crime somewhere else?
Truth be told, I’m not willing to entirely rule out this possibility, but if the Joker is off limits for Gotham, then odds are Greg Berlanti and company can’t touch him, either. Still, it should be noted that Amell is likely to play a Green Arrow doppelganger of some sort during the event, in addition to having already teased fittings for a new costume to be worn.
At the very least, I could see viewers be taken on a tour of Arkham Asylum, since we know it’ll be featured in some capacity. While there, it’s possible that maniacal laughter be heard off in the distance as an Easter egg, if you will – and Amell was granted the honor of doing the voiceover. Time will tell, of course, but color us intrigued.
This fall’s Arrowverse crossover begins on Sunday, December 9 with The Flash, continues on Monday, December 10 with Arrow, and wraps up on Tuesday, December 11 with Supergirl.
