Now is a scary, uncertain time to be a fan of Marvel’s Netflix shows. In fact, it’s almost as if Thanos has become a Netflix executive, as the past couple of weeks have seen The Defenders–related series halved with the cancellation of both Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Seeing as we’ve just had the release of Daredevil season 3 this past Friday, fans are now worrying about what the future holds for the most popular of the four shows.
Unfortunately, it seems that things are still up in the air right now, as star Charlie Cox admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that he has no idea if there’ll be more seasons at this point. If another outing does happen, though, the actor isn’t even sure where the show would take Matt Murdock after his redemptive arc across season 3.
“At this point, I don’t know if there’s any intention of us doing more seasons. But were that to be the case, I think there’s an interesting challenge for the writers, because I don’t think we can do another season where Matt is so isolated, so alone, and so broken and angry. I think in order to avoid being a broken record, we’re going to have to find a Matt Murdock that at least initially has a slightly different attitude toward the people that he loves, and toward himself, and toward God.”
Cox is referring to where the most recent run left Matt. Having hit rock bottom, Murdock had come around to believing in friendship, his faith and legal justice again and is planning to restart his law firm with Foggy Nelson and Karen Page. You could even say that we’ve never seen Matt this content and with the two halves of his life so well-balanced, so you can understand why the actor’s at a loss to think of where the character would go next.
On a lighter note, Cox went on to say that he’d like season 4 to take Matt on a relaxing vacation to the Caribbean, explaining:
“I think in season four, there needs to be at least one episode where he goes on holiday to the Caribbean, and the whole crew needs to migrate down there for two weeks, and the whole episode he just sits on a beach.”
Showrunner Erik Oleson has echoed Cox’s words as well by admitting that he also doesn’t know if there’ll be a fourth season, though he seems hopeful for the future of the show and has said that he’d love to get the opportunity to further the story of the Man Without Fear. Fingers crossed he and Cox get the chance to take Daredevil to that Caribbean beach in Daredevil season 4, then.
