Brie Larson Says Captain Marvel Has Real Depth And Emotion

The MCU fanbase is having a big Captain Marvel moment right now, thanks in no small part to the film’s new trailer giving us a whole lot to process, from dangerous old ladies to Nick Fury’s furry little friend. The MCU fanbase is having a big Captain Marvel moment right now, thanks in no small part to the film’s new trailer giving us a whole lot to process, from dangerous old ladies to Nick Fury’s furry little friend. Adding to the hype levels is an interview on io9 with Oscar-winning star Brie Larson, whose comments suggest that there are sides to her character that we haven’t even seen yet.

The Short Term 12 and Room lead already has an impressive career behind her that’s packed with many an acclaimed and memorable role, but for her MCU debut, Larson alleged that she explored more range as an actress than she has for any prior character.

“This character is probably the most dynamic character that I’ve ever played,” Larson said. “We’ll see what the movie is but, as of now, it’s been the most range I’ve ever played in a character. I’ve had to go through every emotion possible with her. And a lot of this movie, although it has great comedy in it, there’s also real depth to it and emotion.”

Like Larson says, whether or not this character range comes through in the final, big-budget production is another matter, but at the very least, the actress feels there’s a need for more female leads who exhibit depth and complexity.

“I wanna see complicated female characters,” she said. “I wanna see myself, which is not a simple person. I surprise myself constantly by what’s happening and what’s coming up. So hopefully that’s what comes out on screen.”

We’re still a few months away from getting our proper introduction to the MCU’s most powerful hero, but it’s clear that the fans are generally liking what they’re seeing so far. What’s more, Larson’s onscreen foe Ben Mendelsohn had some encouraging words of his own to say in a recent interview, with the Talos actor assuring fans that Marvel Studios’ next picture will be “something really special,” praising the script in particular as “finely crafted” and “absolutely beautiful.”

A biased source, of course, but we’ll find out if Captain Marvel can live up to the hype when the film hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
