Marvel Stars Troll Jake Gyllenhaal Over Spider-Man: Far From Home Post

This could turn out to be a week of major reveals when it comes to the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, and most of them will probably be at least a little more surprising than the recent announcement from Jake Gyllenhaal that he is, in fact “not playing Spider-Man.”

The confirmation came via the actor’s first ever Instagram post, which also included a video teasing the almost-as-obvious news that he’s actually going to be playing Spidey’s foe Mysterio. But once Gyllenhaal shared his personal realization, the floodgates were open for the rest of the internet to offer their mocking responses, and it wasn’t just anonymous fans replying either.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, for instance, took a break from his ongoing social media battle with Hugh Jackman to write:

“I just realized I’m not playing Spider-Man either.”

Tom Holland, meanwhile, saw an opportunity to brag about being one of Marvel’s biggest stars:

“I just realized I AM playing Spider-Man”

Even Mark Ruffalo, who’s no stranger to being trolled by his fellow MCU actors, wrote a blunt “Same,” followed by a sad face. MJ actress, Zendaya, on the other hand, didn’t even offer words, but rather a simple row of sarcastic clap emojis. Overall, it’s been a fitting little hazing ritual for Gyllenhaal’s introduction to both Instagram and the Marvel franchise.

All the same, this hopefully won’t be the only clip of the Nightcrawler star that we see in the coming days, with the first Far From Home trailer expected to drop this Saturday. Though we’ve already seen unofficial set photos of Gyllenhaal in his Mysterio costume, it’s hard to get a proper feel for the character without all the post-production effects that his scenes will likely involve.

But if the impending teaser chooses to keep its focus on the hero instead, then we can at least see Peter’s next villain in action when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 5, 2019.
