While things are looking a little bleak for the Star Trek film series right now, the franchise continues to find new projects on the small screen, with producer Alex Kurtzman now reporting plans for a kid-friendly animated show.

The Star Trek: Discovery co-creator mentioned as such in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, as Kurtzman emphasized the differences between this planned series and the previously announced Star Trek: Lower Decks.

“There’s other animated things that we’re building that are an entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone [from Lower Decks],” Kurtzman said. “What’s exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what’s the different tone, but what’s the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they’re entirely different?”

Details remain thin on the project, though it’s said that the series may be shown somewhere other than CBS All Access.

The producer also offered a little more insight on Lower Decks, which is to be penned by Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan. Kurtzman has claimed that the series is “totally different from anything we’re doing on any of these other shows,” and stresses that while the show is a comedy, Lower Decks isn’t meant to ridicule the franchise, but is “embracing and loving of all the tropes of Star Trek.”

Speaking of animated outings, Kurtzman mentioned that CBS has ordered two Short Treks mini-episodes to debut in the spring after the second season of Discovery comes to a close. In light of all these projects, the writer has stated his intentions to “expand the definition of Star Trek and what has qualified as traditional Star Trek,” while also observing how these various TV releases allow the freedom to tell self-contained stories.

Evidently, there’s more than enough going on already in the Star Trek franchise to hold the attention of fans, but if this kid-focused series has your curiosity, then stay tuned for further details.
