New Detective Pikachu Photo Teases An Unknown Threat

A new photo from the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie teases an unknown threat that awaits our heroes when the film releases this May.

Directed by Rob Letterman and co-written by Nicole Perlman of Guardians of the Galaxy fame, Detective Pikachu has already made a fairly strong, if somewhat divisive first impression, and as we quickly approach its May 10th release later this year, the promotional material continues to pour out onto the web.

While a second trailer is expected to arrive any day now, and will likely be here before the month is up, we now have a new photo to tide us over until it lands. Admittedly, it’s not much, but as you can see in the gallery down below, it depicts Tim – played by Justice Smith – and the titular Pokémon facing some unknown threat.

Whether it’s that rumored secret villain in the film or something else entirely, we can’t say, but you can check it out for yourself and let us know what you think.

Though it’d be fair to feel a bit skeptical about Detective Pikachu at this stage (this is a video game movie, after all), the film’s first trailer at least makes it look like the franchise’s long-awaited jump to live-action cinema will end up being a lot less awkward than many of us probably expect, with the titular investigator and his friends generally looking pretty well-rendered next to the human actors.

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Detective Pikachu will be the hit that the studio clearly thinks it’ll be, but it’s important to remember that the Pokémon series has sold over 300 million video games worldwide, not to mention all the other merchandise it’s moved. As such, there’s certainly enough of a built-in fanbase here that the pic shouldn’t have too much trouble hitting it big at the box office.
