The New Zealand-born director was speaking at the TCA winter press tour when he was asked what he could tease about Endgame. At first, he admitted that he hadn’t seen a finished cut of the film, saying:

“I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know even what happens. They keep their cards so close to their chests.”

However, he was able to say that he’s heard good things about the fourth Avengers flick and believes that it’ll be all the richer for those who know the past three phases of the MCU inside out.

“But from what I’ve heard, it wraps up everything in a really great way. It feels like the fans are getting rewarded for hanging around for 10 years and watching all these films. Because the more you know about the characters and the stories and stuff, the more satisfying this film will be.”

The fact that Waititi hasn’t seen Endgame yet is interesting, as we’re pretty sure that one of the characters he brought into the MCU in Rangarok, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, is set to appear in the movie. Given that James Gunn was consulted over the Guardians of the Galaxy’s arcs in Avengers: Infinity War, you’d think Waititi would be involved in Endgame as well, but that doesn’t appear to have been the case.

From what we’ve seen so far though, Waititi does seem to be spot-on with his description. The first trailer and the recent Super Bowl TV spot have definitely shown that Endgame will reward fans who’ve stuck with the franchise all the way through. For instance, Tony and Nebula doing some engineering work in the TV spot recalls Tony and Yensin doing the same back in 2008’s Iron Man. And that easter egg’s probably just small-fry in comparison to what else is awaiting us in the full thing.

As for what Waititi’s next project with Marvel will be, the filmmaker’s not sure at the moment, but he’s definitely not going to be taking over from Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that’s for sure.

Avengers: Endgame, meanwhile, hits cinemas on April 26th.
