Avengers: Endgame Said To Have Many Callbacks To Past MCU Films

As the culmination point for over a decade of Marvel movies, it probably goes without saying that Avengers: Endgame will contain a few nods to previous MCU releases, but going by a new report from That Hashtag Show’s Charles Murphy, the Avengers: Infinity War sequel could be even more packed with tributes the saga’s history than we thought.

In a recent tweet, the regular scoopster points to the brief shot in last night’s Endgame TV spot showing Tony Stark and Nebula working on something together. Murphy refers to this scene as “a straight callback” to 2008’s Iron Man, before adding that the movie “will call back to many films and pay off some things that were set up years ago.”

In the case of Iron Man and Nebula, it looks like the sequence is referencing the time Stark was imprisoned in a cave, forcing him to work with fellow captive Yinsen to build the first Iron Man suit. It’s a parallel that some fans pointed out as far back as December, when the first trailer showed Tony and possibly Nebula stranded on a ship that’s drifting through space.

With that in mind, it may be tempting to speculate that the film could see Iron Man repeat history by getting out of his latest predicament with some impressive feat of engineering. At the same time, we’d like to think that Anthony and Joe Russo won’t be quite so predictable for the sake of homage, especially when there’s potential for the movie to use this familiar setup to play with our expectations. In any case, we’ll find out what other callbacks the Russo Brothers have lined up when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
