The 8 Biggest Reveals From The New Avengers: Endgame TV Spot

Last night's Super Bowl gifted us a brand new look at Avengers: Endgame, sending the internet into a meltdown. We got our first glimpse at the upcoming fourth Avengers movie with a full-length trailer back in December and while this time we only got a short 30-second TV spot, not a second was wasted, as it gave fans much to unpack and analyze. For one, we got a fresh look at each of the surviving heroes and a better feel for how the world at large has been affected by Thanos' halving the population at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel's still cleverly keeping the actual plot of the film under wraps, but it's clear that the remaining heroes have a plan for how to stop Thanos and reverse the effects of the Decimation. But what else did the preview reveal about the hugely anticipated flick? Well, like we said above, it wasn't terribly long, but here's everything of importance we noticed in the Avengers: Endgame Super Bowl TV spot. New York, Halved The TV spot kicks off with a tear-jerking sequence showing all the dead heroes before the Marvel Studios 10-year logo turns to dust. As sad as it is that these Avengers and Guardians have perished, the promo then reminds us that the problem's a lot bigger than that. Something that fans felt was lacking from the first trailer for Endgame was the sense of how much the world's been changed by the loss of half of the planet's population. Thankfully, this TV spot does a better job at world-building, with a chilling opening scene that shows New York looking abandoned. We see ships littered around the Statue of Liberty and a football stadium totally empty (fitting for a promo that aired during the Super Bowl). The post-credits scene of Infinity War teased something similar to this, too, with helicopters crashing into buildings and cars crashing in the middle of the street as folks vanished. Once the initial chaos was over, it seems things got awful quiet in Manhattan with so many people suddenly missing. As this is the city we've seen the Avengers defend so often by now, it's particularly eerie and depressing to see it so lifeless and desolate. "Where Do We Go, Now That They're Gone?" That opening shot isn't all we get for exploring a post-Decimation world though. The glimpse of the abandoned New York gives us a sense of just how many are missing, but we also get a feel for how those left behind are coping with the loss of family, friends and loved ones. The trailer introduces us to some kind of support group, with a poster on the wall reading: "Where do we go, now that they're gone?" Understandably, there must be a widespread sense of depression and loss of purpose after what Thanos did to the world and we can infer that these community support groups are common practice. In this particular one, none other than Steve Rogers is a member. "Some people move on," we hear Cap say, suggesting that folks are generally just trying to cope with what happened and accept it. However, Steve's having none of it. "But not us," he says, setting up his and his friends' quest to put things right. Tony And Nebula At Work The first Endgame trailer opened up with the tragic shot of Tony Stark marooned in space, filming a goodbye message to Pepper on his Iron Man helmet. That preview left us with no confirmation that he was going to make it back to Earth, but one brief shot in this TV spot lifts our spirits that Stark's not going to be lost in space forever. Following Cap's "not us" line, the TV spot shows the surviving heroes getting into action. First up, we see Tony and Nebula doing some engineering work, which confirms what we all inferred anyway, that both Iron Man and Thanos' remaining daughter were traveling together on the Benatar, the Guardians' ship. So we can now say for certain that Tony is Nebula's new best pal that Karen Gillan's been teasing. Secondly, we can also assume that this is Tony and Nebula springing into action to get themselves out of trouble, likely following Stark's dark moment where he seemed to have admitted defeat. Many fans have noted that this scene, with Tony using his smarts to save himself from certain death with the help of an ally, strongly recalls his origin story from back in 2008's Iron Man. This has got to be deliberate and an intentional callback to where the MCU began. Arrival From Space? The following shot sees Natasha, Steve, Bruce and Rhodey walking across the field that surrounds the Avengers complex. We don't see what they're looking at, but they all seem to be staring agape up at the night sky. It seems a safe bet to say that they 're about to get reinforcements from outer space. But who could this be? Well, it's possible that it's just Thor arriving back at the compound in his usual thunderous way. However, the assembled heroes look shocked at whoever it is, which they wouldn't necessarily be if it was Chris Hemsworth's hero. So, maybe it's Tony and Nebula, having finally made it back to Earth following their tinkering with the Benatar. Alternatively, could it be Captain Marvel herself? We know that she's due to return to Earth in the movie following Nick Fury's distress call to her back in Infinity War and her arrival would definitely leave the Avengers with their mouths hanging. Then again, a lot of fans are assuming that someone's been edited out of this shot, as there's a conspicuous gap between Bruce and Rhodey. If so, that would make the most sense if it was Carol Danvers, so as to save the reveal of her union with the heroes for a later trailer. Rocket's Classic Suit Up to this point in both trailers, we haven't seen anything of Rocket, which had left some fans assuming that the last Guardian had disappeared back into space. After all, he's not part of the Avengers team. However, the mid-point of this TV spot seems to confirm that Rocket remains behind on Earth and it looks like he'll get himself a new costume, too. In a brief shot, we see the raccoon walk into some kind of barn, in what looks to be a coastal region. It's hard to glean too much from his surroundings, but his new costume should excite fans. It's hard to make out, but it looks like he's wearing a blue coat with red trim and matching gloves with buttons going down his right side. If we're correct, it'll be an extremely close match to his classic outfit from the comics. In the source material, the Guardians of the Galaxy typically have a shared uniform, but the movies have never really gone down this route, except for the third act of the first film where they wore Ravagers outfits. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stuck in limbo, we have to thank the Russos for finally giving us a glimpse at the traditional Guardians costume in Endgame. Getting Ready For Round 2 The next batch of clips show various heroes, as the late Star-Lord might say, getting their "mean faces" on as they look like they're preparing to go for another round against Thanos. First of all, we see Black Widow training in a target gallery, working on her sharpshooting skills. This is a curious moment, as Natasha's practicing with a regular firearm here and we're pretty sure that would be useless against Thanos, no matter how good her aim is. Presumably, she's training herself for a fight with some more human foes, then. Perhaps this is before she encounters Hawkeye taking out Yakuza in Tokyo (as seen in the first trailer). Next, we see Ant-Man and War Machine putting their armor on. Rhodey wasn't seen much in the first trailer while Scott Lang only reappeared at the end, having somehow escaped the Quantum Realm. But it looks like he wastes no time in lending a hand. Cap Gets His Shield Back The following hero we get a glimpse of is Thor, looking forlorn. The next shot sees him in his full ceremonial dress (not the hoodie look from the first trailer) with Stormbreaker in his hand, leaving what looks to be an alien structure. There's definitely something Asgardian about the architecture, so what if this is a refugee pod from the Statesman that's landed on Earth? Is this how Valkyrie enters the story? Hawkeye gets a solitary cameo in this TV spot, too, as we see the newly-mohawked Clint Barton looking up at some creepy-looking red glowing light. The first trailer saw him in Tokyo but in this instance, he appears to be surrounded by rubble. Finally, one of the last images of the TV spot gives us something we've been waiting to see since 2016. Yes, Captain America is getting his shield back! We don't see a full or clear shot of what's happening, but a guy tying a leather strap attached to a large metal disk around his sleeve tells us all we need to know. Now that the world's at its direst point, it's time for Steve to properly suit up as Cap again. It'll be interesting to know how Steve gets his shield back. He could easily find it at the Avengers compound and decide to take it, but it'd be a lot more emotional if Tony were to hand it back to him, after he told Steve that he didn't deserve it back in Captain America: Civil War. The Survivors Suit Up Linking back to the earlier clip featuring Steve in a support group, we hear Chris Evans' voiceover repeat from earlier, saying "Not us," once again confirming that the remaining Avengers aren't going to accept that Thanos has won. To prove this, the TV spot ends on a classic slow-motion walking shot of the surviving heroes marching through the Avengers HQ, looking like they're on a mission. In contrast to the big money shot at the end of Infinity War's second trailer, this one makes clever use of the sun's glare to keep the heroes' faces and costumes in shadow. We're pretty sure we can work out who's who, though: from right to left, we have Cap, Thor, Black Widow, Rocket, Ant-Man, War Machine and Bruce Banner. As for their outfits, the lighting makes it look dark, but there does seem to be a more uniform look to what they're wearing. Given all those leaks, it's very likely that the heroes are in their matching red and white Quantum Realm suits here. So this could be the group about to head into the Microverse in order to travel through time and set about stopping Thanos assembling the Infinity Stones. Again, it does look a bit like someone's been edited out of the shot, as there's another big gap in front of War Machine in the line-up. If our previous guess was correct, this could be Marvel withholding showing Captain Danvers with the team once again. Or maybe we've just seeing people-sized holes when they aren't there. In any case, we'll find out soon enough, as Avengers: Endgame hits cinemas on April 26th.
