In 1996, a pixelated legend was born.
Capcom’s Resident Evil series began with a nerve-shredding trip into Spencer Mansion – a mansion filled with all sorts of horrifying twists and turns. Even now, more than 20 years after the fact, the original RE game is still championed as a defining moment in survival horror, what with its tank controls and eerie atmosphere.
It all started with that wonderfully cheesy intro montage, which essentially introduced players to Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, two pillars of Capcom’s Resident Evil series who would later go on to show up in a number of other games in the franchise.
Both characters also star in the video below, which reimagines the original Resident Evil intro as a really rather hilarious ’80s sitcom.
Turns out remixing footage and/or gameplay to produce meme-worthy content is very much in vogue, given the reams of Resident Evil 2 mods. Each one is more hilarious than the last, as they place the focus squarely on Mr. X (AKA the Tyrant) to flip expectations on their head. Frankly, we’ve seen the lot – Mr. X sporting a thong, Thomas the Tank Engine stalking Leon and Claire… you name it.
On a more general note, though, the hype and excitement generated by Resident Evil 2, coupled with the barnstorming success of Devil May Cry 5, is further proof that Capcom is back to its best. Let’s not forget that the publisher also rolled out Monster Hunter World and Resident Evil 7 in the past 18 months, so surely we’ll see another AAA title (and perhaps a trip down memory lane, like Resident Evil 3: Nemesis?) come to fruition in the very near future.
