Fear The Walking Dead Showrunner Says To Expect More Crossovers

The Walking Dead franchise is expanding in some exciting new ways, with various new spinoffs in development including those Andrew Lincoln TV movies and a third TV show. This bodes well for more crossovers between the two series currently on the air - the parent series, soon to be entering its tenth season, and Fear the Walking Dead. In fact, we have in good authority that we should expect more crossovers to come.

Co-showrunner Ian Goldberg spoke to the press at Wonder Con about the chances of characters switching between the two series and admitted that it’s not up to himself and Andrew Chambliss but TWD‘s chief content officer Scott M. Gimple to decide if and when crossovers happen.

“[Co-showrunner] Andrew [Chambliss] and I are really just focused on Fear. Scott Gimple is in charge of the greater universe.”

That said, Goldberg stressed that the Walking Dead universe is increasingly becoming more intersectional and teased that viewers can likely prepare for more cross-pollination.

“I think we can say it’s a universe that’s constantly expanding and intersecting with each other, so anything’s possible. We’ve seen crossovers happen and they’ve been really exciting, so I’d say to expect more.”

For its first three seasons, Fear remained apart from TWD, but this all changed in a major way when Lennie James joined the cast in the season 4 premiere, complete with a cameo from Rick Grimes in the opener. James’ arrival as Morgan Jones revitalized the show, too, so it’s no surprise that a similar move is being made in the upcoming season 5.

Austin Amelio is joining the Fear crew in the new run as Dwight, last seen on the parent show in season 8 when Daryl banished the redeemed Savior from Alexandria and ordered him never to return. As such, it should be exciting to see how he comes face to face with Morgan again and how he fits in with the spinoff’s storyline.

Fear the Walking Dead returns to AMC on Sunday, June 2nd.
