Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Was The Most Popular Streaming Show In April

Against all odds, the second season of Star Trek: Discovery came out on top last month, besting both The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Cobra Kai.

While the past few years have been rather rough for Star Trek fans, things are on the up and up for Gene Roddenberry’s visionary franchise. After the fourth film was unceremoniously canceled – due to Beyond‘s poor box office performance – attention slowly shifted to the series’ future on the small screen. Earlier this year, rumors began circulating that Michelle Yeoh might be getting her own spinoff – where she would reprise her roles as Captain Georgiou – and just last week, production officially began on a Picard series, led by legendary actor Patrick Stewart.

And then of course, there’s Star Trek: Discovery, which just wrapped up its second season. This digital-only show is available for streaming on CBS All Access (and Netflix, for those who live outside North America), and stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, a science specialist aboard the USS Discovery. Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp and Mary Wiseman round out of the ship’s crew.

While the show’s debut episodes drew criticism for a while, it looks like its second season has resonated with critics and fans alike. As reported by ScreenRant, between April 6th and May 5th, Star Trek: Discovery was the most “in-demand digital original series” around the world, per a report by Parrot Analytics. The show’s second season even managed to beat out Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and YouTube Premium’s Cobra Kai.

CBS has not divulged specific figures in regards to the success of their streaming platform, but a recent investor’s call revealed they’d already hit the 4 million subscriber mark. For now, then, it looks like the future Star Trek: Discovery is safe, given that the show’s already been renewed for a third season.
