Mysterio May Return In Future MCU Films After Spider-Man: Far From Home

Fans can't wait to see Mysterio in action in this summer's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Not only will he be played by Jake Gyllenhaal - who once nearly played Spidey himself back in 2004, and sport the character's classic costume (complete with fish-bowl helmet), but he'll also apparently open the doors to the wider Marvel multiverse.

Fans can’t wait to see Mysterio in action in this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Even better though is that the sequel isn’t expected to be his only appearance in the franchise. Producer Eric Carroll spoke to io9 recently and revealed that there are plans to bring us more of Mysterio after Far From Home. Giving us a taste of where the character will go in this film and beyond, Carroll compared Quentin Beck’s story arc to Doctor Strange‘s Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

“We wanted to find our ‘in’ and similar to what we did with Mordo in Doctor Strange. We wanted to give them time to have relationships so when and if we get to do something different with Mysterio, it really feels like a betrayal… and we’re hopefully setting the stage for something really spectacular and that feels really Spider-Man, which is, again, if we get to do something else with this character, then they’ve already got this really personal relationship.”

Likening Beck to Mordo likely tells us a lot about how FFH will handle Mysterio. Fans have wondered how he’ll become the villain of the movie, after the trailers have depicted him as a hero who works alongside Spider-Man to defeat the Elementals attacking Europe. We all assumed he was secretly behind the monsters and had a dark, ulterior purpose, but if he’s more like Mordo though, it could be that Beck begins as a good guy but for some reason changes tack and ends up as a villain, ready to become a fully-fledged foe in, say, the closer of the Spidey trilogy.

Gyllenhaal has already made a big impression from what little we’ve seen of him so far, so it’s good to hear that he’ll be served well with a meaty role that could be spread across several movies. If nothing else, this is just another reason to be excited for Spider-Man: Far From Home when it arrives in theaters on July 2nd.
