WB Developing New Superman Movie Without Henry Cavill

Over the past couple of weeks, We Got This Covered has been bringing you the latest on what we’re hearing from our sources about the future of the DCEU. In particular, we’ve reported that the upcoming Supergirl movie will reboot the Kryptonian mythos on the big screen, thereby allowing for a new version of Superman to appear down the line.

Not only that, but we’ve also been informed that Warner Bros. is already developing a new Superman film and apparently, it won’t star Henry Cavill. It’s unknown at this time who will replace him, but our source is adamant that the actor is no longer attached to the role. As per our previous report about the DCEU being split into the original continuity and a fresh timeline in the future, this Superman film will take place in the new one, meaning it’ll exist alongside movies like Supergirl and The Batman. 

We haven’t been told precisely how far along the project is, so it could be in the very earliest stages, but it certainly sounds like Warner Bros. wants to do more with Superman, and soon. That only makes sense, too, as they’ve wasted no time in casting Robert Pattinson as the new Batman, after Ben Affleck was plagued by controversial movies. As such, it stands to reason that the studio would do the same for their other big hitter now that Cavill’s out the door.

Rumors have pointed to the British actor walking away from the role since last year, though cast and crew have denied it. That Superman cameo in Shazam! – which saw the hero played by an unknown actor, their face out of shot – spoke volumes though about the future of the character in the franchise being uncertain.

Previous intel has pointed to the Supergirl movie shooting as soon as spring 2020 and though Kara’s cousin isn’t expected to appear in her solo film, maybe work on the new Superman will be shuffled along if production on that goes well. Time will tell, but as soon as we hear more on WB’s plans for the Man of Steel, we’ll be sure to let you know.
