There’s been a lot of speculation about the upcoming Loki TV series. It’d generally been assumed that it would be a prequel, possibly with Tom Hiddleston in a narrating role, following the God of Mischief before the MCU timeline. However, with the official announcement of the show during yesterday’s big Marvel panel at Comic-Con, we now know the truth. And it seems we had the wrong end of the stick.
It’s been confirmed that Hiddleston will be the star of the Loki show and it will continue on from where we last saw the trickster in Avengers: Endgame. Fans will remember that Iron Man and Ant-Man inadvertently created a new timeline when they travelled back to 2012 and allowed Loki to flee from captivity with the Space Stone.
We’ve theorized a lot about how this would entirely change Loki’s character, as he would never redeem himself in Thor: Ragnarok and die a hero’s death in Avengers: Infinity War in this timeline. Now, we’ll get to find out exactly how different he’ll be in the series.
Hiddleston appeared at the panel as well and teased that Loki will offer “a new departure” for the character, admitting that’s all he can say for the moment. It seems Marvel is keeping a lid on what else the show will contain for now, which makes sense as it’s still a while away from reaching us. It’s the third MCU series to arrive on Disney Plus, after all. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier comes in August 2020, with WandaVision and Loki then dropping in early 2021. The What If? animated series and Hawkeye follow later that same year.
It’s worth noting that Hiddleston didn’t appear on stage when Thor: Love and Thunder was announced though, which suggests the main timeline version really is dead and won’t show up in the movie. So, fans looking for their God of Mischief fix will not want to miss Loki in a couple of years’ time.
