Batwoman Isn’t Permitted To Use This DC Character

If you're a longtime fan of DC across multiple forms of media, then you're aware of how red tape separating each division of Warner Bros. can sometimes limit which characters can be utilized in a given production. These days, they're a bit more liberal, but I can remember when The Batman animated series couldn't use Two-Face, Ra's al Ghul or Scarecrow, lest viewers confuse them with the versions existing in Christopher Nolan's films!

Similarly, the highly anticipated Batwoman show will likely have some restrictions placed on it. For the most part, any embargo applied should involve villains appearing in movies directed by Matt Reeves, though a myriad of rogues should be fair game now that Gotham has concluded.

For the immediate future, at least, don’t expect to see Renee Montoya. According to showrunner Caroline Dries, she’s untouchable due to her involvement in Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn):

“It’s too early to tell with Renee. We’re not allowed to use her because they’re using her in a movie coming up. Maybe when that movie comes and goes, they’ll let us use her.”

In the eyes of fans of Renee’s comic book romance with Kate Kane, this’ll come as a disappointment. But since the titular heroine will have other lover interests, it’s not exactly the end of the world. Still, like Dries said, the door could be opened in future seasons.

On the plus side, it should perk you up to learn that none other than Hush will show up in the series’ third episode. That’s huge news considering how he’s never appeared in villainous form in live action. Yes, Gotham did feature a young Tommy Elliott who hung out with Bruce Wayne, but that’s not exactly the same as what we’re getting here.

Batwoman premieres on Sunday, October 6th on The CW.
