Bad news, fans of steel: Krypton has been cancelled. Syfy has opted not to pick up the Superman prequel for another year after its recently completed second season. What's more, the touted Lobo spinoff, supposed to star Emmett Scanlan as the Main Man after he made his debut in season 2, is also no longer moving forward at the network.

There is a silver lining, though, as Deadline reports that Warner Horizon Scripted Television, who produce the show, are already in conversation with other outlets in the hopes of continuing the series elsewhere. DC Universe seems like the most likely option, seeing as Krypton season 1 is already available on the streaming service with season 2 due in 2020. If not, then there’s always the upcoming HBO Max.

It’s also worth noting that Syfy previously cancelled another cult favorite hit in the form of The Expanse and that found a new home at Amazon. So, there’s every chance that Krypton could likewise extended its life elsewhere. As for why the DC series was cancelled in the first place, Deadline writes that it’s the same deal as with The Expanse – though the show was originally a big ratings winner, viewing figures slipped and the network can no longer put up the high production costs.

If this is the last we see of Krypton, which would be a crying shame, at least the series managed to conclude in an exciting way. Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) battled Colin Salmon’s General Zod and Doomsday as well as having a son with Wallis Day’s Nyssa-Vex – Jor-El, the father of Superman. There would be plenty more places for the show to go, though, if it did get renewed on a different platform, not least the fact that Brainiac was last seen kidnapping baby Jor.

We’ll have to sit tight and wait to see what happens here but Krypton fans, you know what to do. Kick up some fuss on social media and make sure they know you want more.
