There has been a cloud of mystery surrounding Martin Scorsese‘s next film, now that his latest, Hugo, has hit cinemas. The director recently signed on to direct an American film adaptation of Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman, indicating that he’s making some serious decisions. Now he has put the speculation to rest on which project would be his next; in an interview with Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo on their Radio Five program, Scorsese said the following:

“I’m hoping to do Endo’s book next, Silence… Not hoping, we’re literally pulling all the elements together at this point.”

It’s great that Scorsese has finally set the record straight, and we hope that by “pulling all the elements together” Scorsese means that they’re deep in pre-production. He’s been trying to make Silence for years, it was originally set to be his next film after Gangs Of New York.

When it was last announced a few years back, it was said that Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael García Bernal would lead the cast. However, since the project was shelved and then re-announced it’s unclear whether or not any of those actors are still attached to the project.

Scorsese was asked in the interview about Day-Lewis’s involvement and replied by saying “I’m not sure. Daniel’s working with Steve right now.” With Daniel Day Lewis being the method actor he is, one who apparently hasn’t dropped his Lincoln accent since March, his process is draining. Hence he only does a film every few years.

On a personal note, if Day-Lewis falls through, my vote for his replacement for the part of Fr. Cristóvão Ferreira, goes to Johnny Depp.
