I'm a writer/editor who's been at the site since 2015. I cover politics, weird history, video games and... well, anything really. Keep it breezy, keep it light, keep it straightforward.
Josh Boone's New Mutants looks set to give Fox's X-Men franchise a breath of fresh air. Described as "Stephen King meets John Hughes," it's purported to be almost a horror film that focuses on the twisted and unusual possibilities that come with mutant powers.
I feel a great disturbance in the 'shipping' fan community, as if millions of voices are suddenly crying out in disappointment. Today's Star Wars: The Last Jedi news appears to be focused on what's not in the film rather than what is, and according to Rian Johnson, “[There’s] no one-to-one equivalent of the Han-to-Leia, burning, unrequited love. In our story, that’s not a centerpiece.”
Director David Lowery's A Ghost Story was one of the big success stories of this year's Sundance Film Festival, with critics describing it as unforgettable, ambitious and powerfully poetic. The recently released trailer seems to support those opinions, giving us a glimpse into a weird and moving alternative ghost movie in which the titular spook is a decidedly lo-fi dude in a sheet with eye holes.
Adaptations of Philip K. Dick stories are always welcome and soon, we'll be getting a whole load of them thanks to Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams. This British/American co-production (exec produced by Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston) will consist of ten standalone episodes, each bringing to life one of Dick's short stories. The currently announced adaptations are: The Commuter, The Impossible Planet, Crazy Diamond, Father Thing, Real Life, The Hood Maker and Kill All Others.
American Horror Story season 7 remains shrouded in mystery. We know that it's about the 2016 Presidential Election and we know that fictionalized versions of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are set to appear, but we still don't know who the lead characters will be or what supernatural (or otherwise) menace will be at the core of the story.
Sony Pictures has just announced Silver & Black, a film to be based on Spider-Man supporting characters Silver Sable and Black Cat, with director Gina Prince-Bythewood attached to helm. She's also set to rewrite the existing script by Thor: The Dark World scribe Christopher Yost. Coming hot on the heels of Tom Hardy's casting in the Venom movie, it looks as if the studio truly has some high ambitions for its Spider-Man IP.
The world of The Strain just can't catch a break. Originally created by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan in a trilogy of horror novels that were published between 2009 and 2011, the characters have to contend with a killer vampire virus that's slowly infecting planet Earth and knocking regular homo sapiens a couple of notches down the food chain. That'd be bad enough, but the end of season 3 saw a global thermonuclear apocalypse being added to the list of problems.
Throughout yesterday's Star Wars: The Last Jedi newsgasm, information about one important character was conspicuous by its absence. I'm talking of course about the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke, ultimate commander of the villainous First Order and the top dog bad guy of the whole new trilogy.
Milla Jovovich and the Resident Evil film franchise have enjoyed a long and mutually fruitful relationship, beginning with 2002's first outing and concluding six films later with last year's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Presumably, after that last film wrapped, Jovovich sat back and put her feet up, happy that she'd said all that needed to be said about killer monster viruses, mutated freaks and sub-Matrix superpowers.
It's probably understandable that Kylo Ren is not going to be a happy bunny when Star Wars: The Last Jedi begins. Not only did he lose a duel to someone who'd barely touched a lightsaber before (a real blow to his dark side credibility), but his actions were partly responsible for the First Order losing their prize weapon. And, y'know, he impaled his dad. Committing patricide would ruin anyone's day, but Ren's father was Han Solo aka the coolest guy in the universe! That's gotta sting.
