I think it's safe to say that if any film with a small budget flew in under the radar and surprised us all in 2017, it was most definitely Get Out. Having raked in over $250 million dollars worldwide, writer/director Jordan Peele reaffirmed that big ideas are still capable of generating buzz similar to that of anything with a big budget. Really, it's no wonder that it made our list compiling last year's best horror movies and is nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Given how Wonder Woman smashed box office records last year, it’s only expected that those largely unfamiliar with the comics flock to bookstores to check them out. Among them will likely be some younger readers and, luckily, that age group is covered thanks to DC Super Hero Girls.
Considering that this is a topic I don't get to write about very often, I'm going to open up and say that there are few franchises I love more than Silent Hill. Being a fan who's been on board since the original game dropped in 1999, I've since felt compelled to regularly revisit the otherworldly town, often referring to it as "my home away from home." Heck, I've even met and seen Akira Yamaoka perform live, an experience I will cherish for the rest of my days.
If anything has proven to be true on the past few seasons of Arrow, it's that Oliver Queen's past likes to come back to haunt him. I mean, not only has he had to contend with the likes of Prometheus and Cayden James, but it appears as though some surviving members of the League of Assassins haven't forgotten about his prior transgressions.
So far, I'd like to think that Black Lightning has been very well received by the DC TV fanbase. I mean, not only has it thus far proved to be a critical darling, but its grounded take on the superhero story infused with real world gang violence and social commentary has made for some truly addictive programming, to say the least.
While some may hold dear movie franchises such as Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings or anything having to do with Harry Potter, it’s actually Death Wish that does it for me – and I’m probably one of the few guys under fifty years of age who will say that. Hey, I’ve always been a fan of vigilante justice on film, and few other series have pulled it off so well.
Although many actors have become typecast or mainstays in the horror genre (that's certainly not a bad thing because it can keep you employed for life), there aren't as many who can say that they've inhabited more than one iconic role. Fortunately for Kane Hodder, the former Jason Voorhees has kept lovers of the macabre entertained in recent years as Victor Crowley in the Hatchet series of films. Granted, the latter is less mainstream than the former, but our point remains valid.
Being somebody who watches most DC TV shows these days and a lifelong fan of the Man of Steel, even I must admit that I approached Krypton with some hesitation. After all, we already have Supergirl on the air, so one can only wonder how thinly this property can be spread over television. And with Metropolis now also being on the way, that argument has even more validity.
While there has been a great resurgence in the horror genre in recent years, some of you may agree with me in saying that there are still a lot of stinkers to be found out there. And while movies like Witchboard will always pale in comparison to the likes of Halloween and The Shining, it still seems like we get five Annabelles for every IT. It's just the way of things.
Not long ago, we were given a definite answer as to when Gotham will return to finish out the remaining eleven episodes of its fourth season. To some, that may not sound like the biggest news, but when you consider that we left off on a cliffhanger that included Jerome Valeska in Arkham Asylum back in December and they failed to give us a return date, well, then you can imagine why the hiatus has been doubly difficult to endure.
