When it comes time to discuss the illustrious career of a director such as John Carpenter, it can become rather difficult to choose a single favorite from his films. But as much as I love Halloween and Big Trouble in Little China, I think Escape from New York actually takes the cake for me.
By now, I'm sure most of you have heard that James Gunn is writing and directing a rather high profile DC-based movie for Warner Bros., that being The Suicide Squad. If the title sounds at all peculiar to you, that's because it's said to be more of a reboot than a sequel. Call me crazy, but even though 2016's Suicide Squad overseen by David Ayer was a somewhat divisive flick, it was a financial and merchandising success. That said, one could argue throwing everything out the door wouldn't make much sense.
If I had to single out one favorite character to have appeared on Gotham during its memorable run, I’m not sure that I technically could. One year ago at this time, I would’ve answered with “Jerome Valeska,” but he’s since been killed off. In his place is now twin brother Jeremiah, also played by the incomparable Cameron Monaghan. Amazingly, the guy’s been able to serve up two distinctly different takes on the Joker.
So far, this season of The Flash has seen Sherloque Wells prove to be a most valuable ally in the ongoing war with Cicada. Not only has his impressive intellect helped the team at STAR Labs in a variety of situations, but he's also getting to the bottom of whatever's been going on with Nora West-Allen and Eobard Thawne.
When The CW's Arrowverse was first revealed to have a multiverse of its own, the original tally of Earths had been set at 52. This, of course, was done in an effort to reflect the established status quo found in DC Comics following the events of 52 more than a decade ago.
If anything could be said about the current season of The Flash, it'd certainly be that it's a family affair. From the opening moments of last fall's premiere, Nora West-Allen has been a constant presence on the show, causing Barry and Iris to forge a relationship with their daughter from the future without notice. And interestingly enough, they didn't require much of a learning curve, allowing for this new dynamic to bring even more heart to a series that was chock full to begin with.
Jazzed as I am to see a Birds of Prey movie finally coming to fruition, I'm still getting used to the idea of Harley Quinn being a part of that particular super group. On the plus side, though, she's bringing Huntress and Black Canary along for the ride, so that'll satisfy me as a comic book reader.
If you're a longtime fan of the Arrowverse, then you know of how the series comprising it have teased future big bads in seasons before they're introduced. Actually, it's Arrow that exercises this practice more often than not, but I'll never forget how The Flash name-dropped Clifford DeVoe months before we met him as the formidable Thinker.
Now that we know Batman exists within the Arrowverse - albeit as someone who's been missing for three years - it seems like the producers behind these shows are free to drop references to his supporting characters following the incredible "Elseworlds" crossover. In fact, The Flash's midseason premiere even contained a Batmobile Easter egg.
Even after Warner Bros. have released a host of films to feature the Caped Crusader, it could be argued that his impressive intellect has yet to be explored to the fullest. After all, there's a very good reason why he's often referred to as "the World's Greatest Detective."
