Had you tuned in for the "Elseworlds" crossover, you probably noticed an absence of trailers promoting each individual DC show's midseason premieres. Most likely, this was in an effort not to distract from the event's fluid storytelling, but now we're starting to get our hands on new footage.
In the midst of all the commotion surrounding the "Elseworlds" crossover - not to mention the announcement of 2019's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" - trailers for individual DC series became overshadowed. Fortunately, it didn't take The CW very long to release them online. And if we're to learn anything from Arrow's midseason premiere teaser, it's that this show will start off the New Year with a bang.
Ever since we saw a future newspaper headline promising the Flash will go missing in a Crisis back in the fall of 2014, those of us familiar with DC Comics couldn't help thinking some sort of adaptation for Crisis on Infinite Earths would be in the pipeline. In fact, those suspicions doubled once Supergirl came over from CBS and joined The CW's Arrowverse family. Don't forget, she exists on Earth-38.
As one would expect, more eyes are affixed to the Arrowverse whenever those annual crossovers roll around each fall. Really, even lapsed and casual fans can't help tuning in because there's just something so appealing about the superhero team-up concept.
Of the many things that have had fans going bonkers for the "Elseworlds" crossover, one of the first treats for DC fans arrived in the form of two nods to Smallville. Long story short, the same exterior location used for the Kent farm on the beloved Superman prequel series made its return on Sunday night during an episode of The Flash - and Remy Zero's main title theme accompanied it, much to my delight.
Now that Batman has been confirmed to exist in the Arrowverse - and on both Earth-1 and Earth-38, no less - it's mighty difficult to avoid imagining what he might look like in your head. Furthermore, pondering his history is something else that'll no doubt pick at us long after the "Elseworlds" crossover ends.
Much like the comic books that spawned it, the Arrowverse hasn't shied away from the multiverse concept. In fact, it's allowed for us to meet alternate versions of our favorite DC characters, not to mention making it possible for Earth-1 heroes like Green Arrow and the Flash to team up with Earth-38's Supergirl - even in the days when her home was internally referred to as "Earth-CBS."
Though we still have one more chapter to go in what's proving to be one hell of a memorable crossover event, tonight's installment of "Elseworlds" could very well go down as the most unforgettable segment. Granted, it was cool to see the heroes of the Arrowverse doing their thing once again, but it's Ruby Rose's Batwoman who made the lasting impression.
For years, The CW had pretty much left weekend programming to the whims of local affiliates, but they decided to step up their game this past fall by expanding their prime time lineup to six nights a week. In doing so, they allowed for Supergirl and Charmed to lead the way in this new venture.
In the past few weeks, Fox has done a fine job of recapturing the interest of Gotham fans with a variety of promos teasing what’s to come for the heroes and villains making up the insane city. If you require a few examples, feel free to look back on the one showing what Scarecrow has been up to, or take a peek at Jeremiah Valeska getting into all sorts of trouble.
