Though I don't think that anyone is terribly excited for Alcon's upcoming Point Break remake, one promising aspect of it is actor Edgar Ramirez, who will be playing the role of Bodhi, which Patrick Swayze originated in the 1991 version. Recently, while discussing his role as a demon-hunting priest in the upcoming horror thriller Deliver Us From Evil, Ramirez talked a little about his goals in playing the character:
With Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, memoir adaptation Wild and drama The Good Lie all on the way this year, Reese Witherspoon's message to Hollywood seems pretty simple: Oscar, please. And though Wild is shaping up to be her best chance of snagging a Best Actress nomination, The Good Lie is definitely the most blatantly obvious attempt to pull at voters' heartstrings.
With Middle Eastern political drama Tyrant, vampire thriller The Strain and Judy Greer-Nat Faxon comedy Married all on the way this summer, You're the Worst almost certainly holds the unfortunate title of least-anticipated FX show. The raunchy comedy follows two self-destructive individuals (Aya Cash and Chris Geere) who attempt to turn their one-night stand into a relationship, despite each preferring purely physical interactions with the opposite sex. A new red-band trailer has landed online for the series, making You're the Worst seem more like a hard-R comedy than a network show.
I don't think it will come as much of a surprise to anyone that The Interview is already ruffling some major feathers, just days after the arrival of its first trailer. In the button-pushing comedy, which stars James Franco and Seth Rogen, a talk show host (Franco) and his producer (Rogen) travel to North Korea to interview dictator Kim Jong-Un, only to find themselves recruited by the CIA to assassinate Kim.
It's hard to believe, but the first season of Showtime's Penny Dreadful is already drawing to a close. Strangely, despite that, "Possession" doesn't feel like any penultimate episode that I've seen lately. Instead of setting the table for a climactic battle between Malcolm's group of misfits and the Master's army of vampires, it almost exclusively focuses on the struggle for Vanessa's soul (which, to be fair, has also been a huge part of the first season, though it certainly wasn't what worked to bring the characters together).
With just six little words - "I want to play a game" - the Jigsaw killer in Saw became (for better or worse) a fixture of modern horror cinema. It's inevitable that such an iconic character would garner inferior copycats. Sadly, in 13 Sins, a remake of a Thai film called 13 Beloved, the fact that Jigsaw's mark can be felt everywhere doesn't automatically make the movie itself any good. Saw (occasionally) managed to make over-the-top gore entertaining and darkly funny. 13 Sins, on the other hand, excises everything other than the grim brutality, making it a much less enjoyable viewing experience.
Clint Eastwood released Jersey Boys this weekend, but we all know that the Clint we know and love was never big into showtunes. The best Eastwood is definitely the one who chomped cigars and made ponchos look cool in Sergio Leone's The Man with No Name trilogy.
Like the best episodes of The Twilight Zone, Christopher Nolan's Memento and Shane Carruth's Primer before it, indie sci-fi Coherence is a brilliantly staged and sharply written mindscrew of a movie that left me equal parts giddy, chilled and bewildered. It's also easily one of the most thought-provoking and deeply engrossing cinematic experiences of the year - not to mention a highly auspicious debut for writer-director James Ward Byrkit.
Today, we've learned that Sin City: A Dame to Kill For actress Rosario Dawson has joined the cast of Netflix and Marvel's Daredevil in a pivotal role, appearing in multiple episodes.
More than a few of us were surprised when Universal bumped its summer tentpole, unofficially titled Bourne 5, almost a full year, from August of 2015 to July of 2016. The reasons given included that a script (being rewritten by Andrew Baldwin) wasn't yet finalized and that NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton needed a release date. According to Latino Review, however, Universal actually had a far more exciting reason to push the spy thriller back - Matt Damon, who starred as Jason Bourne in the first three Bourne installments but let Jeremy Renner take over in The Bourne Legacy, may be returning.
