It's been a month since I had to write anything about Justin Bieber, Skrillex or the piece of aural excrement known as "Where Are Ü Now" that they squeezed out through Skrillex and Diplo's Jack Ü project. Bieber appears to have decided that he wanted to put out something more newsworthy than his genitals, though, because he's taken to social media to hint at something new that he and Skrillex have in the works.
In the current era of electronic music it's almost impossible to find something that hasn't been done. Take Elephante's "Age Of Innocence," for instance. By all accounts, this is a well-executed piece of progressive house that demonstrates the potential merits of main stage EDM. On the other hand, however, Zedd already demonstrated it first.
With SFX Entertainment subsidiary ID&T's future in the United States looking dubious as ever, it's good to hear that Mysteryland USA will be returning in 2016 - albeit no longer on Memorial Day Weekend.
The successor in a long line of Dutch electronic music artists who have secured the coveted DJ Mag #1 honor, progressive house superstar Hardwell has the kind of career that almost every DJ/producer dreams of. Now they can all live vicariously through him by watching I Am Hardwell: Living The Dream, a documentary of his latest 34-stop tour which has its red carpet premiere today to coincide with Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE).
2015 is turning out to be the year of Eric Prydz. The Swedish DJ/producer's Epic 3.0 performance at Madison Square Gardens last year propelled him into the progressive house stratosphere, and while he's already been around for over a decade, the boost in popularity has become a platform by which he's released three monthly EPs leading up to his upcoming self-titled debut album.
Zhu's Genisis series has turned out some quality music, but the most highly anticipated track of the bunch has been his collaboration with bass music icon Skrillex. Now that the master of non-marketing has played it out live, we can confirm that it was for good reason - what we've heard makes us want Skrillex to trade Diplo out for Zhu the next time he decides to form an EDM super group.
Remember that time Don Diablo blew us all away with an amazing new remix? No? Oh, that's right, neither do I. It seems like every EDM artist under the sun has remixed Florence + the Machine's entire discography over the past few years, but very rarely do any of them do it justice. Don Diablo teamed up with new kid on the block Khrebto for this entirely forgettable rendition of "You've Got The Love" (which itself is a cover of a song of its namesake by The Source featuring Candi Staton).
It feels like Dutch progressive house duo Vicetone is trying to consistently make music that I'll have to file under "guilty pleasure." Several weeks ago they cross pollinated two saccharine genres to yield "Catch Me," and they've followed it up with the main stage musings of "I'm On fire."
Love him or hate him, you can't deny that Hardwell picks respectable times to engage in social media feuds. Most recently he had come to the aid of his protege Dyro after Seth Troxler made disparaging remarks about the DJ/producer, but this time he's taken on music streaming powerhouse SoundCloud.
It looks as though a little role reversal is going on between Jauz and Knife Party these days. It wasn't all that long ago that Knife party revealed they would be adopting some of the ever-popular bass house sound that has become the former artist's calling card, but it looks like he's returned the favor by remixing their upcoming release, "PLUR Police," into a dubstep banger of bone-shaking magnitude.
