With a stupendous theatrical run in the rearview mirror, during which the Merc with a Mouth shot up the all-time domestic gross chart for an R-rated movie, Deadpool 2 officially hacked, slashed and cussed itself right onto your preferred digital platform this past Tuesday, and is scheduled to complete the journey to home video on August 21st.
After voting to return Deadpool, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men to their rightful owner late last month, the pending merger between the House of Mouse and 21st Century Fox has the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom in a state of frenzy. After all, the amalgamation will almost certainly see the integration of said intellectual property into the highest grossing film franchise of all time. Sadly, however, the fusion of the entertainment conglomerate and the mass media corporation could very well spell the end of 20th Century Fox.
If you’re searching for an example of how quickly a fanbase can turn on a franchise, look no further than Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), The Last Jedi's the second installment in what's been dubbed the Sequel Trilogy, and is currently eighth on the all-time domestic gross chart ($620M). Not to mention it can presently lay claim to the eleventh spot globally ($1.3B) and is 90% Certified Fresh on the Tomatometer. Bafflingly, though, despite each and every remarkable achievement, the Star Wars fandom is fighting tooth and nail to have it stricken from the record.
With the merger between The Walt Disney Company and 21st Century Fox teetering on completion, it won’t be long before Deadpool, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four are returned to their rightful owner. And given the abhorrent reception to the reboot of the latter, directed by Josh Trank, I’m sure Marvel's eager to get another crack at transitioning the superhuman supergroup from comic book to the big screen.
With the merger between the House of Mouse and 21st Century Fox all but official, Chairman and CEO of the former, Bob Iger, has shifted his all-encompassing gaze onto launching the presently unnamed Disney streaming service, which is scheduled to be with us sometime in 2019.
Throughout the last week or so, both Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 made their way onto your preferred digital platform. Having each surpassed the ten-figure plateau at the box office - one more emphatically than the other, obviously - it’s only natural to assume the Marvel fanbase would make the artificial release of the pair equally as successful, which it has, as the twain currently occupy the first and second spot on the iTunes Top Movies chart.
Unfortunately, whether or not James Gunn and The Walt Disney Company will be able to reconcile their working relationship does appear to be an open and shut case. Sadly, despite an outcry of support from Dave Bautista and the rest of his lovable ragtag crew, the House of Mouse is unlikely to bring back the shepherd of the irreverent supergroup franchise and, as a result of his termination, the man responsible for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies will not be behind the camera for the forthcoming third installment.
There doesn’t appear to be an end in sight regarding the recent splurging of The Walt Disney Company. With the amalgamation between itself and 21st Century Fox all but official, Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has shifted his all-encompassing gaze onto bringing each and every MCU installment home in order to proffer them as part of the extensive back catalogue which will debut with the presently unnamed Disney streaming service. Unfortunately, however, another high profile intellectual property - Star Wars - will not be along for the ride.
With principal photography now scheduled to get underway on September 22nd, expect updates regarding the Joker origin film to ramp up in the foreseeable future. And, to prove we're not “joking” around, the latest tidbit is suggesting that the titular jester might be - rather appropriately - taken down a dark path.
Upon arriving at your preferred retailer to pick up Avengers: Infinity War - which is scheduled to make the intergalactic journey to home video on August 14th - you might notice the packaging is a little light. This is, of course, due to the fact that a large portion of the titular supergroup was eviscerated by Thanos (Josh Brolin) during the cataclysmic finale.
