Channing Tatum has had an interesting and surprisingly varied career over the years. Beginning as a street dancer in the Step Up films, he went on to become a lovable lug in 21 Jump Street and its sequel, proving that he could keep up with the comic timing of Jonah Hill. But despite some forays into dramatic acting with Magic Mike and Stop-Loss, Tatum has yet to prove that he can really carry a central dramatic part. That appears to be changing with the release of Bennett Miller's wrestling drama Foxcatcher, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to generally positive reviews.
It is safe to say that no one is surprised about the critical reaction to Transformers: Age of Extinction. It's barely hit the big screen and already it has an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and has inspired a slew of angry, disgusted Tweets, reviews, and posts from around the film community. But regardless of what the critics think of the film, it has already cashed in at the box office - Deadline thinks that it will break $300 million worldwide if Sunday estimates are correct. There's no doubt that director Michael Bay will be laughing all the way to the bank on this one.
It has been a tumultuous time for the James Bond franchise. Questions about directors and screenwriters have abounded, and even when things seem to be solidly in place there is still the chance for upheaval. The latest on the as-yet untitled Bond 24 is the return of screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who are coming back to do some apparently needed work on the script of their Skyfall co-writer, John Logan.
If you search Star Wars: Episode VII on Google, you will come up with all kinds of rumors, many of them stretching back into the land before time. The latest in the long, long list of rumors that as yet have no official confirmation (and probably won't until the movie actually comes out) refer to the issue of the "Jedi Hunters," as we reported yesterday. There's a bit more to be added though, so here we go.
Although I am habitually skeptical about franchise reboots, I must admit that the latest developments on the Planet of the Apes films are far and away more interesting than most remakes or prequels. Based on current trailers and a newly released clip from the film, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes promises to carry on the unique approach of its predecessor, as the apes continue to evolve and humanity continues to die off.
Many moons ago, we reported that DreamWorks Animation was moving towards making a movie called Trolls, based on those wispy-haired naked dolls that were so popular into the 90s. Although we have begged them not to do it, the studio has gone ahead with the idea, setting up Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After) as director. Now, they've added Anna Kendrick to the project, which means that it will probably actually happen.
I know that some of you are looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy, while still others wait with bated breath for Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. As for myself, The Expendables 3 is one of the few summer releases I am actively looking forward to. I want nothing more out of my summer than to watch old action heroes blow stuff up.
If you were already feeling over-saturated by all the Star Wars: Episode VII talk, then brace yourselves: it's about to get even uglier. Not only are we going to get the next installment in the Star Wars franchise in December 2015, but we're also going to get a rebuttal in the form of The People vs. George Lucas: Episode II that same month.
Did you think that the Father of the Bride franchise had run its course after two films? Did you?! Well, you were wrong, because George Banks (Steve Martin) and family are back again for yet another wedding in Father of the Bride 3. This time it's the Banks' son Matty about to get hitched and here's the twist: it's totally to a guy!
It's been awhile since we had a nice Dracula origin story, hasn't it? One or two attempts have been made to tell a version of the Dracula narrative that incorporates some real history - like the whole bit about Vlad Dracula not actually being a vampire - with the more recognizable supernatural elements, but none of them have been too successful. The latest film to attempt a melding of historical fact and supernatural fiction is Dracula Untold, which has just released its first poster.
