I am trying to find the appropriate words to describe the first trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson's Pompeii, but none are readily springing to mind. /Film described as a mix of Titanic, Gladiator and Volcano, but I think that might be giving it too much credit. I would say that it looks like 300, only where the Persians are a volcano and the Spartans are attacking it with swords because that will totally work.
Watching the latest trailer for the World War II drama The Book Thief brought to mind something that a great man, played by Sean Connery, once said: "Goose-stepping morons like yourself should try reading book instead of burning them!" Indeed. That seems to be the message of The Book Thief, and a good message it is too.
When Terry Gilliam gets it right, his films are second to none; when he gets it wrong, there are few things more painful to watch. I think that you will all join me in hoping and praying that The Zero Theorem, set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, will be more along the lines of Brazil and less along the lines of Tideland. With the first poster and an extended statement from Gilliam himself landing today, I think we have reason to be hopeful.
Shakespeare adaptations come around every few years, usually when Hollywood has nothing better to do. There have been the good (Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing), the bad (Michael Hoffman's A Midsummer Night's Dream) and the ugly (Ralph Fiennes's Coriolanus). One of the more recent Shakespearean adaptations to be announced is Macbeth, originally set to star Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Now we learn that Portman is out and Marion Cotillard has come on board as Shakespeare's meanest villainess.
In the extensive lists of superhero movies that we can expect to hit theatres in the next few years - right up until 2021, if Marvel has their way - perhaps the most confusing one to those of us outside the comics sub-culture is Ant-Man. Is he a man who turns into an ant? What's the fun of that? I now know that he grows bigger and smaller, but that's really about it. With director Edgar Wright at the helm, even my little cynical self has to admit to being intrigued by the prospects of Ant-Man and how it will measure up to other films in the Marvel Universe.

He is, after all, very serious. But do you get the sense that maybe you've seen this movie before? Maybe a dozen times or so, in different iterations?

But sometimes Abrams and his marketing boys get things right; this is one of those times. In a teaser for an as-yet unnamed Abrams project with Bad Robot, we are left wondering just what is going on, what the trailer is for and why that guy's mouth is all stitched up. And you know what? It's pretty intriguing.

2015 is all set to be quite the year for Disney. So far the studio has six films slated for release that year, most of them during those all-important summer months when the children are out of school and the grown-ups are so bored that they will go see literally anything. So, one of the more surprising omissions in Disney's current line-up is Star Wars: Episode VII, which has no set release date as yet.
