It's been a busy, busy week for the DC Extended Universe - but would you expect any less? With a packed slate of projects all brewing in various stages of development, updates have been arriving at an alarming rate. Earlier this week, we learned that the studio was hoping to put out a second DC film in 2018, to go along with Aquaman, and just a few hours ago, we reported on Jaume-Collet Serra joining the mix for the Suicide Squad 2 director hunt.
Mission: Impossible 6 is slowly but surely coming together over at Paramount under the watchful eye of Christopher McQuarrie. With Tom Cruise locked in and a summer 2018 release date set, the casting search now begins and tonight, Deadline reports that the sequel has picked up Justice League's Henry Cavill for an undisclosed role.
Earlier tonight, we brought you the news that James Wan's Aquaman had once again had its release date pushed back, this time from October 5th to December 21st, 2018. Though not a huge change by any means, the announcement did highlight the fact that now that production on The Batman has been delayed, the studio only has one DC-based project releasing next year, or so it seemed.
Netflix is making some BIG moves into the world of original films. Earlier today, they snapped up a very exciting project coming to us from Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy and Andrew Dominik called War Party, and now they're teaming up with director Justin Lin to bring us The Stand Off, a period drama written by Black Swan's Mark Heyman.
The first season of Netflix's mega-popular horror fantasy series, Stranger Things, introduced viewers to a creepy parallel dimension that came to be known as the Upside Down. The first few episodes offered teasing glimpses of the world in which the Demogorgon resided, until later in the season several characters actually ventured there themselves - but, we never actually found out what this dark alternate universe was or how it came to be.
Given how successful Logan has turned out to be, one would assume that director James Mangold has his pick of projects when it comes to what he'll do next. And while he has expressed interest in possibly doing an X-23 film at some point down the road, it seems like he'll be taking a break from the world of mutants for a while to bring us an adaptation of Don Winslow's upcoming novel The Force.
Colossus fans were not terribly pleased with the character's depiction in X-Men 2 and 3, but that all changed when the metal mutant powerhouse showed up as a supporting player in Deadpool. Replacing Daniel Cudmore in the part, Stefan Kapicic acted out Colossus' role via motion capture, but he still managed to portray a much more comic faithful interpretation of Peter Rasputin.
It's probably not a huge surprise given Marvel Studios' penchant for pumping out sequels, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has now confirmed that very early plans are indeed in place for a third installment.
It's actually quite surprising that it's taken so long for Warner Bros. to do this, but it seems as if the studio is finally ready to revisit one of their most successful franchises of all-time: The Matrix. Deadline reports that they're in the "exploratory phase" of possibly putting together another film, trying to see if there's still "more life" left in the series. No word on if the original cast, or even the Wachowskis, would be involved, but this is still very exciting news.
