Ah, the Thanksgiving season. Time to stuff ourselves silly, unbutton our pants, and pray that Eli Roth finally turns his Grindhouse "Thanksgiving" trailer into the modern-day holiday slasher feature it deserves to be. What! There just aren't enough Thanksgiving themed horror movies, don't you agree? Sure, we've got Thankskilling and Thankskilling 3 (the movie so "good" it skipped a sequel), but let's just say those are more acquired taste - no matter how many times Turkie says, "Gobble Gobble, mother fucker!"

Play Dead Review [NYCHFF 2013]
Play Dead isn't exactly a movie - it's more a movie experience. Magicians Todd Robbins and Teller (of Penn and Teller) opened an off-Broadway show of the same name, the original incarnation of Play Dead, running weekly at Players Theatre on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village. For the show's final performance, Teller hired Shade Rupe to document the night's spooky events, and from that footage comes the film we have today. There are no Hollywood special effects or computerized images - all the tricks you see are performed by Todd Robbins himself, dancing with the dead in ways that will surely make your skin crawl. How does he successfully manipulate everything we know about life and death? Find out - if you dare.

The Last Days On Mars Review
Imagine if you were stranded on Mars, a distant planet with unlimited mysteries, moons away from any rescue or civilization. What could make that situation worse? You're already thinking about needing a spaceship just to escape, you've got dwindling life support, you're on freakin' Mars, how could it possibly get any worse?! Zombies. That's right bitches, there are zombies on Mars, JUST LIKE JOHN CARPENTER TOLD US THERE WOULD BE! Alright, those were totally ghosts, but any chance I get to reference John Carpenter's Ghosts Of Mars I take. Anywho, yes, there's apparently some type of bacterial life on Mars that turns people into zombies, spreading like an infection, and Liev Schreiber is the only man who can stop it during The Last Days On Mars.

Frozen Review
Coming off their video game themed smash-hit Wreck It Ralph (which got robbed of an Oscar in my opinion), Frozen is a fun departure that gets back to what Disney does best - dynamic storytelling through song. While I figured we were in for a song or two, once the tunes started grooving, there was no stopping the infectiously catchy rhythms. Like I said, only a few days ago I saw a character killed on screen by having his...well...since this is a kid friendly movie, I'll keep my review kid friendly, but you get the picture - despite my other cinematic ventures, it couldn't have been easier for me to fall in love with this winter wonderland.

Captured Hearts [NYCHFF 2013]
Before my screening of Captured Hearts, director Dylan Bank did a short introduction where he tried to express just how sinisterly fucked up his film is. Being the horror fan I am, I figured I'd seen it all before, but somewhere between Santa Clause (played by Charles Durning) exposing genitalia made out of Christmas decorations and a full-out on-screen orgy, I realized Dylan wasn't messing around with his intro. I'd love a hit of whatever the hell writers (and actors) Ken Del Vecchio and Rachael Robbins were on while writing this outlandish, demented script. I can't even discuss some of the tamer material out of shame, just on the off chance that a family member reads this review. Seriously, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this sexually perverse "torture porn" cheese-fest. Ken? Rachael? What the hell did I just watch?

Exclusive Video Interview With Spike Lee And Elizabeth Olsen On Oldboy
I won't hide the fact that I was one of the first people to scoff at the idea of anyone remaking Park Chan-Wook's revenge thriller Oldboy. The Korean film has been heralded as a proper masterpiece, which is a universally accepted classification. Plus, I've seen too many of my favorite foreign films be remade with a dumbed down, Hollywood version ([REC]). That being said, there's something different about Spike Lee's Oldboy.
